In a very surprising Tweet made by Brett “Naded” Leonard yesterday, it was announced that he would be leaving OpTic Gaming due to personal reasons, with more details on his departure given through a link to a forum post on the Team Beyond forums.

"Hello everyone! I have a couple things I would like to announce. [IMG]

First off, I would like to thank everyone for wishing me a Happy Birthday today, yes I have just turned 26 years old so I'm definitely going to be celebrating that later tonight and of course celebrating my Warriors getting back to the NBA Finals! LETS GO! But...

On to what I wanted to announce about my current team situation. I'm going to just get straight to the point and then explain a little reasoning behind the decision. I will be stepping down from competing with OpTic for this season and they will be finding a new 4th to play with. Now you may ask, why?

To kind of give a little back story, after getting 2nd/MVP at worlds I was forced to come to a very tough decision since all of my teammates went separate ways. I could of either stopped competing, join OpTic/another team with known players, or make my own team. I couldn't really decide what to do and it was stressing me out a lot. I was considering taking a break from competing but I had numerous talks with friends, they all said I shouldn't quit competing and continue to play.

I finally decided to join OpTic and try to help revive the Halo team there. I knowingly, going into joining, knew we were going to have a lot of work ahead of us to be a top team and was not expecting to win games consistently anytime soon but was hoping things would change with hard work. Shortly after I joined Flamesword let me know that he is possibly considering retirement, which kind of threw me off a little considering I thought we all were going to be in it for the long run but now we might eventually have a team change soon (which happened after PAX). When the PAX tournament was announced it upset me/stressed me out more that the Pro League spot that my team earned is gone and now I have to fly across the country for one day to compete for the spot with only like a week of practice with the new team.

After PAX we had to quickly find a new 4th (Str8 Sick) before the next tournament which was like a week away. Keep in mind, this entire time after PAX until Burbank and even after Burbank, I was really just overall stressed out that things were not going the way I thought it would with the team as far as practice is concerned but I still stayed strong and practiced hard everyday. We then ended up making the pro league in the last spot available during the LCQ which was great. During this time I felt the two big problems with our team: 1. We didn't really practice as much as I thought we would as a team. 2. I felt the chemistry just wasn't there in game or out of game for me, which I am sure many people including my teammates would agree with.

That is a little of the reasoning to why I have decided it will be best to step down from competing this season so they can pick up another 4th that better fits them and also be able to relieve a lot of stress off my shoulders so I can focus on other aspects of my life (health, streaming, family to name a few) because this past month or so has been so hectic for me. This is NOT at all me leaving on bad terms with anyone from the team, this is just a decision I felt would not only be best for me but best for the team as well. I may continue to compete in the next season so DO NOT think of this is as a "retirement" but as of now I'm going to be focusing on other things rather than competing/practicing with a team all the time. Hey, after 10 years of competing in every Halo since Halo 2 at the top level without a break, I think a break is deserved haha [IMG]!

With that being said I really did enjoy my time on OpTic and wish them the best of luck! I'm SO incredibly happy I was able to help OpTic get a Pro League spot. As expected, the #GreenWall was amazing with the amount of support you guys showed and I thank you all for supporting my decision as it will be best for everyone! Also, huge thank you to all my fans as well for being so supportive and I will be seeing you on stream! Love you guys!

    - Brett "Naded"

Unfortunately, this leaves OpTic with only two days to find a replacement before the HCS Pro League season begins, though they do have some options; Former Team Liquid member Bradley “APG” Laws and Richie “Heinz” Heinz are a couple of names that have fair chances at getting their spot.

Gaming drama. The concept amuses me.

I shall wait for the E-sport retort likely to follow my comment.

This isn't drama, did you read the post? It's just news.

Listen here XANDRITH, if that is your real name.

News is all about drama (You didn't see me but I air quoted for effect)

Just in case you've forgotten what drama is "Xandrith"(This time I used real quotes just for the hell of it)

      Here is the breakdown

      There's you drama right there!

So then why does the concept amuse you? News in gaming is amusing?

We both know what you meant, don't try to bullshit your way out now.

I said what I meant. The only thing missing in this is some big controversy. The classic struggle for dominance between old and new members maybe? Anyway, I'm not saying there was one, just that it is all that's missing from this letter.

It's specifically the concept of gaming drama that amuses me. "Did you hear? Billy stopped playing video games 2 days before the big game so that he could reorganize his life." I certainly didn't imagine that being news way back when I used to play Snafu.

You seem like you took for serious what I was throwing down. I tried to make it as cheeky as I could. Sorry if it missed the mark.

Who cares? They're a bunch of kids with next to zero real transferable skills to the job market. Trying to make a career in professional gaming [with Halo] is irrational and will only serve to screw you over later in life.

I think Naded may have been a better fit playstyle-wise. APG will probably mesh better with the team on a personality level though, and sometimes that's more important. I think they definitely have the potential to finish in the top 4.

Naded probably would've been the best on Optic like he was on Allegiance but I think they were having issues playing together and Naded decided to just let it go before going through the frustrations with a team he can't get on the same page with again.

Not so far fetched when you take the money they can make into consideration.

Making tons of money doing something you love? Little hard labor? Sounds like a great move to me lol.

Never said it was far fetched, just that the concept amuses me. The fact that people can play video games for money is bizarre. Then again so is the ridiculous money regular sports bring in.

Could you imagine multi million dollar contracts for competitive hopscotch? Next thing you know the news reports would be all, "Tammy failed to make the qualifier today. Reports say that her mom had failed to buy her the HIP certified trainers. Tiny Tina to take her spot at the Hopscotch Open."

I'm a multi-million dollar making competitive hopscotch player and I resent this.

Tons of money? What would you say is "tons"? Who do you reckon the highest earning Halo player is? How much do you think they earn in a year? Maybe $100k? $200k? That's a good bit of money if any of them manage, but is it consistent? And what happens to them when they're no longer good enough in the future to keep up? Will they have earned enough to retire on?

      No.

Some of them are making a decent chunk of change, but at the expense of their professional futures outside of gaming. I mean, aside from QA testing, do you really think there are many career opportunities for these kids? They're forgoing developing competitive marketable skills just so they can play a ****ing video game. The vast majority of them will be regretting their decisions once they hit their mid 30's and realize they're nothing but a bunch of losers.

I'm not hating on eSports btw. I'm hating on Halo eSports which lacks the money for any of these kids to make a real income that'll last them years to come. Other games where kids can earn 7-digit winnings, they're completely respectable. Halo isn't.

That moment Schnitzel inevitably loses people that back his point of view.

Would you not be disappointed with your life if you had some dead end mediocre paying job at 35? Let's be real, not of these kids will be clearing 6-figures a year after they retire from Halo.

You don't need to play Halo till you're 35 to get in this boat.

I get that, but anyone who plays video games enough to be that good non stop didn't really have goals or plans to make a career out of their life in the first place. It's not like they will get to 35 & broke saying "what happened? How am I not rich?". They didn't have a set plan in the 1st place I'm sure. They played way too much & got good, decided to compete & then turned out to be good enough to earn a living off of it. I think it's pretty sweet to be doing that though I agree they're screwed in the long run. Also they don't need 6 figures a year to live a nice life. I make 80,000 a year & I am perfectly happy. My career is locked in & I'll be here till I retire/die. I'm not going to the Bahamas & Jamaica every year but I am a happy guy.
