EDIT: Voting has now closed and Kanaloa's Wrath by Minister Muffin wins! Thank you to all who participated, and all who voted.

ForgeHub and GrifballHUB collaborated to host the Hammerfall Grifball Forge Contest challenging the community to create an awesome Grifball court, and sure enough, they delivered. The contest received 72 spectacular community Forge creations of such high calibre that most would be welcome additions to the Grifball Matchmaking Playlist.

The Hammerfall Grifball Court Forge contest results are in. The top three courts (in random order) are...

The judge panel between ForgeHub and GrifballHub provided for some extremely mixed results to reach our top 3 finalists. Please help us refine our selections further by participating in our community vote hosted on HaloWaypoint! The first place winner will receive an extra $300, creating a grand total of $500!

My personal fave was Mbaraki District - I know the lighting lets it down, but I think the animated scoreboard with the super intendent was just a really neat touch. The other two are great though. :)

      Three things to consider.

The judges didn't get together and choose what they thought was safe. Their choices were wildly different. The contest winners were chosen purely by math. You had to impress 2 judges enough to have them pick your court as a top 5 to make it to the finals. This alone excluded many fantastic courts.

3 of the judges, do not forge in halo 5, know none of the contestants, and play Grifball almost every day. 2 of them have never forged. They made their decisions based on their desire to actually play Grifball on the court, not on how it was forged, or where it was set.

You can never please everyone with the results of a contest. If the posters here went through the judging process it's likely 3 different courts would have been selected. If the posters complaining at the Waypoint thread selected there would be 3 completely different winners.

Exactly. It's impossible to really explain how contests end up with the results they do, but having participated in judging some, I totally understand how this happens.

Though I would personally not care to be involved in a judging process that's completely transparent (only because I think I'd be less forthright with my opinions), one of the benefits will be that people will get some understanding of the dynamics that are at play. Personal perspectives/opinions inevitably play an enormous part in the process. I don't see that as either a good or a bad thing, it's just a part of the process. It's the biggest part of the process. You can start with some baseline quality requirements, but beyond that, contest results are entirely the result of combining everyone's perspectives and eliminating entries when there's not a general consensus. This usually results in some extremely good entries not getting recognized. It is what it is...

A Forge contest judged by people who don't Forge. What's next - cooking contest judged by people with no experience in the kitchen?

You're not supposed to "please everyone" with the results of a contest. You're supposed to select the best content, and I find it embarrassing to read that people who are woefully unqualified for the task were selected when it's apparent they have no ability to perform it. I'm sure Arthurbloodshot is a nice guy and Reinastorm obviously spent a lot of time on this contest, but what these results communicate is not that these were the best maps, but that the judges had no business judging anything. I can't say I'm surprised however because the maps people actually want to play Grifball on have been boring for the last 8 odd years.

I have to say there is logic in this. Things like piece usage, building an atmosphere or just the painful process of lighting your map are being looked at in a different perspective as a forger.

I would've voted a bit differently like maybe many forgers as Nokyard just stated but then again, it was all very close and painfully difficult for the judges.

Why do you need to be Forger to judge Grifball maps? They're not judging the creation process, they're judging the end result which definitely doesn't require any knowledge about Forge itself.

Today I learned singing shows are judged by people who don't know anything about singing, playing music or working in the studio, but as long as they buy albums it's okay.

You don't have to know or understand the process behind something to judge it. I don't care how well Forged something is if the end result is mediocre. I could understand you argument a bit better if this was a core gametype map contest, but these are Grifball maps. If anything these kinds of maps require the least amount of Forge knowledge as they're mostly looks over function.

If we're weighing which is more important (which is a stupid argument, btw), I'd argue that having judges that are familiar with playing the gametype a contest is focusing on is more valuable than having judges that understand the process of combining pieces to make a playable map for the gametype.

Oh I'm sorry I forgot being a pro Grifball player (lol) is all it takes.

ForgeHub contests are a joke, and they have been a joke ever since I was made a judge.

All contests where someones creative exploits are being judged/rated are a 'joke' if people are legitimately expecting them to be an accurate measure of objective quality. Contests like this exist because the community wants and enjoys them. I have yet to meet any group of 'judges' that believes they're an authority on forge or level/game design. They're simply satisfying a need (people want contests, so someone has to judge them). The problem isn't in the process, it's in the expectation that the process should determine what's objectively 'best'.

Mbaraki was ok looking but it wasn't clear to me at all where the side boundaries lay. Don't tell me that this was acceptable map design for what is to be a straight forward design.

Inheritor was simply way too visually noisy. It literally looked like a 343 developed map.

In all honesty I didn't know there was 70 maps total. Is there a link to the top 15 somewhere??

So are you saying I lost all competency because I didn't purchase an xb1/h5 or buy my new all powerful PC yet? We are talking grifball here. I can assure you it's an art contest.

Forge hub contests are community oriented fun events. No one claims the community is a pool of experts . That was why I quickly removed my map Hekau from forge hub the moment someone commented on it. I didn't want any nonsense review impacting its chances of winning the recochette contest.

I am confused why you are so bothered about this? Did you have a dog in the fight?

Btw I am not being critical of forge hub and no one should take my comments that way.

Is exactly how contests should be ran. Without understanding that the presidential election is based upon the electoral college, Donald Trump would have won the popular vote at the price of the election itself. This is basic stuff.

Thanks Nitro, looking at the maps at that link, I wold have chosen Odyssey as #2 hands down - very simple, earth tones, easy on the eyes, looks like a real place to feel soooo gooood.

I really like Dragon's Keep art and architecturee, and I like the stairs, but they seem narrow, which is not ideal for grifball imo.

I would have rage quit many of the maps immediately, because I would hate to have to play on them due to their intense art - Inheritor, Super M, Rapture, Neath, Digital, Spectrum, Club Atom, Achievement City, for example.

Are you guys attacking me for the way this contest was handled?

If that's the case i will just bow out of any future community events.

These things are supposed to be fun, generate interest in our community, and provide a story for the Weekly Community Bulletin which shines a little spotlight on our corner of the gaming universe. Not be a spinning stone to grind your ax upon.
