From the very beginning, community creations have been central to the Halo experience. From stacking up grenades underneath an unsuspecting Warthog to multiplayer movie-making, the Halo sandbox has always been fertile soil for millions of moments and memories created for, and by, the fans.

In 2007, Halo 3 upped the ante with the introduction of a map manipulation tool called Forge, and quite literally changed the game forever, enabling a cascade of creativity, from new map and unique game type experiences to interactive art – all created by the community itself.

When Forge was redesigned from the ground up for Halo 5: Guardians on the Xbox One, it opened the door to even more inventive community-created content, pushing the boundaries even further to give players more power and control than ever before, and removing as many constraints as possible to allow for the creation of incredibly high quality maps. From the stunningly beautiful maps created by WyvernZu, to the hilarious mini-games from TurbTastic, we’ve been continually blown away with the countless crazy and creative experiences that Halo fans have made. As a famous Spartan once said, however, “I think we’re just getting started…”

Today, we’re excited to announce that we’re bringing this same spirit of creation and collaboration to the PC later this year with Forge – Halo 5: Guardians Edition for Windows 10. Best of all? It will be absolutely free. In addition to the evolutions already present in the mode on Xbox One, Forge – Halo 5: Guardians Edition for Windows 10 will include some exciting new features designed specifically with PC users in mind, including:

    • Keyboard & Mouse Support – For the first time ever, Forgers will have the option of using a keyboard & mouse allowing for more precision control than ever before.
    • Increased Resolution – Support for multiple resolutions including 4k.
    • Test and Play with Friends – Enlist the help of Friends to help build, test, and play your Forge creations on Windows 10.
    • Build on Windows 10 and Publish to Xbox One – Experiences built on Windows 10 can be published to and played on Xbox One, opening the doors for countless new experiences to be enjoyed by players all over the world.
If you’re already finding yourself excited about the incredible possibilities that are opened up by expanding Forge to the Windows 10 platform, trust us, you’re not alone. 343 Industries UGC Director, Tom French, and his team are already chomping at the bit to get these new creative tools into the hands of the community.

“Forge on the PC will finally give the mouse/keyboard editing precision the community has always been clamoring for. On top of that, an updated and optimized UI geared towards mouse interactions makes a lot of the inputs in Forge easier/faster than before.

Since we released Forge in Halo 5 we’ve seen so many amazing new things come from it – from weird mini-games we could have never anticipated to meticulously crafted maps that are even approaching the visual quality of internally built maps. The team has continued to wonder what we’d get if we could put Forge in the hands of as many people as possible, and making it free on Windows 10 literally gives the chance to anyone who wants to jump in and try their hands at building a cool new map for Halo 5. I’m excited to see what the future content from the community will bring!”

    • Tom French, UGC Director, 343 Industries
We’ll have a lot more to share about Forge – Halo 5: Guardians Edition on Windows 10 later this year, but look for even more exciting updates coming to the Forge experience in Halo 5: Guardians on the Xbox One in the coming months – including new environments, advanced file sharing capabilities, new pieces, palettes, props, and much more.

I can't express the amount of excitement... seriously. The possibilities are endless at this point. CAPI will be very mature by the time that comes around too. So I'm really excited to see where this goes and how they plan to support things going forward. This is a MASSIVE leap for the Forge community and I'm proud to have been a part of its history since the beginning. AHHHH!!! I can't stop screaming...

Aka. Now instead of not getting anything done at home, you're not going to be productive anywhere there's a computer.

      Aka. Always forging.

      Read this very carefully:

"Enlist the help of Friends to help build, test, and play your Forge creations on Windows 10"

You can "play" your forge creations on Windows 10:)

That sentence caught my attention. Since forge is the Halo Game engine and has drop-in testing they must be bringing Halo 5 to windows. The real question, Is there cross platform play?

There really can't be cross-platform because there's such a huge advantage to PC players in shooters.

I feel like the editor will be controlled by M+K but when running around you will have to use a controller as any One controller works on pc with a usb cable.

I agree mouse and keyboard does add a level of accuracy not available on the controller. I would steer away from saying it can't happen.

Before Halo CE everyone said first person shooters would never work on controllers for competitive multi. Now look where we are.

I think if cross platform play was done right and allowed for fair play, Halo 5 could have a much longer shelf-life and our maps could reach a broader scope of players.

How is this playable apart from xb1 in a mp environment? On a win 10 platform will I be able to play only in the halo sandbox with others? do I have to buy an xb1 to have matchmaking experience? Seriously I will get it for free but I just can't see myself spending much time with it other than to see what they have as a complete offering if I can't play CTF or slayer on my maps.

You know it would be pretty cool if 343 offered forge as part of a game dev kit. Seriously that would make indie dev more viable and they could offer it as part of a more comprehensive game dev kit for $$.

Especially if they offered it as just a map editor to work with say Unity.

      This, OMG, just. Yes.

I wonder if having PC hardware more advanced than the Xbox One opens forge up to more possibilities. On one hand, I'm thinking that's ridiculous because the maps still need to be playable on the Xbox One, but my other hand is way out in left field telling me the forging process is likely way more stressful on the hardware than loading the maps in matchmaking/custom games, so forging on a PC may give more options.

I'm talking out my ass though. I have no idea how any of that stuff works. Regardless, this is extremely exciting.

its highly likely this will be the case. theres still a hard object limit on the one.....loading overlimited maps in forge has always been more stressful then in game. this is going to be the best forge cab be

i think it will be a type of limited playability, sort of like an "advanced" spartan mode.
I know they wouldn't give us this game for free, rather, give everyone a tool for a game and console they will have to buy shortly after, lol.

to imagine, around 4-5 guys work on Forge, how grossly understaffed, and i bet underpaid. What they're doing is huge and i cant wait to try this out. With this ill be able to forge constantly, whether in playing Xbox One, or my brother is playing and im screwing around on the computer, but for now, i will pull a @WARHOLIC

      Read this very carefully:
Build on Windows 10 and Publish to Xbox One – Experiences built on Windows 10 can be published to and played on Xbox One
In other words we may only be able to create/publish maps from pc to xbox one, but be unable to work on One maps on pc :/.

Can't wait for this. I'll still be using my controller for it but a constant 144 FPS will be nice.
