My avatar is pretty old actually, but I get a hard job on it, I think I spend entire hours in that, but I used like 6-7 layers to work with the light and the Reflex "Crystal" effect you could see on it. Yeah, basically you need to get a certain point of perception of the overall form, you can get something like that using the diferent Brush settings (for the background) and creating a clipping mask in that layer. Before that It's possible to work with the "Green sides", to create it, you can simple use shortcut keys as "Shift" when drawing with the mouse at the same time, so you can get perfect horizontal/vertical lines. Basically play with the brush settings and before that you can adjust some contrast and light clicking ctrl+U... :P
