How are you connecting your computer up at the moment?

It is possible to connect wirelessly to your computer, but you need to bridge your connection through your computer and use it as an access point first.

Can you control your wireless settings? (Meaning, you're not under a school connection/stealing someone's wifi/etc...)

You need a router and an ethernet cord (the blue internet cord if you didnt know) to access xbox live. You could also try going wireless, but I think you still need the router.
