I really don't want to shell out 100 bucks for the xbox 360 wireless adapter (the one that connects via USB). So, my question is, will the old xbox wireless adapter work (the one via ethernet, MN-740) properly for my 360? If it does, then why the hell don't people just buy that? I've found several for $30-$40.

Its a matter of convenience. Some people don't know you can use other wireless adaptors to connect to xbox live, so they go out and buy the $100 wireless adaptor. The one for xbox the original xbox should work, but it won't run off the power of the 360 and have a neat clip on feature like the 360 model.

Well, I would think it might be better for it NOT to run on the 360 power, and I really don't care about the clip at all.

Is there any difference in signal strength or anything that would affect LIVE?

That I do not know, I would suggest going to amazon.com or a similar site and looking at the product reviews by actual owners. Those always help me when making purchasing decisions.

Well here are some reviews for the other person wondering:

After reading these reviews I had already printed my return label when I decided to call Microsoft just to double-check. Yes it does work on the 360. I did the following, and at least it worked for me:
    1. Do not use the disk that comes in the box.
    2. Just plug it in, go to "settings" and put in your encryption key if you have one, if not just leave it alone.
    3. Try more than once. For some weird reason it only worked at the second try.
I have this adapter in the basement and the router in the first floor. It works great, comes with the cable, and I saved $50...

One last thing, I was only able to use WEP-128 even though my router supports the latest security. I haven't checked but I'm sure there's an available firmware update that will bump the adapter to accept WPA.

My router uses WEP-128, so I should be fine anyway. Those reviews answer my question and I hope it answers the person that also was wondering. But I still wonder why people would spend up to $60 more.

I use the 360 wireless adapter and it works fine. It has pretty good ratings, so I suggest you get it. Just my opinion
