I hate it when someone works hard on a map, they post it, and they get say 17 view and 0 replies. WTF is that! Even if you dont like the map, at least say something so they dont feel like all that work was for nothing. And yeah I am pissed about my map Traverse but I also see plenty of other maps that have about 50 views and 0 replies or 1 if they are lucky. I thought this was a site where you could get your maps seen, get people to download them and see your forge skills, AND get some ****ing criticism about how to forge better. Goddammit you guys are no help!
Dude, we are not obligated to post anything. And your map preview has only been up a couple hours, so chill out.
Try not to expect much when posting your maps. Calm down, don't get worked up into a lather, the map will take care of the impressions for you. Start slow, take your time, and learn from your mistakes. And focus all that positive into your next map. There are a lot of friendly Forgers out there so try networking with like minded level designers and learn a lot of the tricks of the trade. Your maps will get better with experience and people will notice your work.
Umad, bro? These things take time, but I do admit, FH doesn't seem like the best place to get CC on maps. It's more of a show-off place. You know, post your finished maps. If it's good it'll float, if it's 'bad' it'll sink, and fast. Likely without much helpful CC.
. . . and the ones who are frequently recognized in the community take the spotlight every week . . . I agree, the only rule here is don't complain about it and someone will notice you at some point. If you **** up once, people are likely to remember it.
Getting mad at people will not help. In fact I was about to give you feedback on it before I saw this. nerdness, if I remember correctly you were the one who decided to go spam advertisements everywhere for your map preview. I can't wait to see this get infracted for advertising.
no offense but your map is just building blocks and walls with bridges inbetween. what am i suppose to comment on? ok the bridges and blocks-the bridges look way too scary to cross so i would probably stay on my side unless i had camo to get across. building blocks could be replaced with other items such as braces and platforms. honestly its a cool idea just looks like youve only made a couple maps... if it were mine i would make the bridges smaller and the bases bigger but really your design has already been bested by bungie : ( its very similar to sword base on some level. oh and your maps only been out for two hours its no big deal.. my first map i posted got 40 downloads my second got 70 downloads and my third got 150 so if this tells you anthing its keep going and your name and skills will be recognized once youve established a foundation. Fritzer has given some good advice i would re read his post
My impression was that if it's one of the top 1% of maps in terms of quality, it gets featured; otherwise, it drops like a boulder. But I'll readily admit I haven't checked out the map section all that much lately.
EDIT: Since I feel as though my point didn't come off as intended, I'll re-phrase this. In my time here I've posted my share of maps; some have gone to reach 15+ replies, while some crashed and burned and got 4 to 5 replies. When I look it over now; it does make sense (To me at least). I'll say this right off, in the screenshots, you gotta nail the aesthetics and make it look great. Whatever kind of map you may have made, be it Infection to Competitive, you gotta make the screenshots show off any unique / cool aesthetics on the map. It's also good to take the screenshots from a gameplay so it shows people on the map, which indicates you've tested it. I also advise putting a short caption for each image explaining what it is. Lastly, make the thumbnail interesting. Try to make it look great / aesthetically nailed. Draw people in with it. As for colored members getting more replies; that will happen. It isn't worth getting mad over, it's simply because (probably) people want to get their attention / kiss their asses. And we can't do anything about that, so you might as well accept it.
My impression was that your map would fail if any of the following apply: - Your thumbnail isn't interesting enough - Your username isn't instantly recognizable - You aren't colored Other than that, you're good to go!
Heh....yeah. This place seems to be almost entirely focused on a core group of about maybe 20 or so people; if you're not one of those hallowed few, then nothing you ever make will get noticed. Doesn't really seem to matter how much you post, how nice/helpful you are, or what you make. If you're not one of those, it'll sink like a rock in a lake of air. Getting help or a group is a catch 22 , it seems. I say that because I've tried all the methods mentioned here. The testers refused to try my map, I don't have any friends on FH because I haven't made anything noteworthy, I'm largely ignored in 99% of my posts, any customs I do get into aren't that useful since I (through no fault of my own) dont have a mic, my previews get ignored, and my thumbnails do nothing. Oh well. You get used to it. Of the 5 topics I've posted about my maps, I've gotten a grand total of 2 pieces of feedback/responses. People act like it's such a waste of time to comment on a few pics, but that takes what, 20 seconds? Maybe? It's absolutely infuriating, but what can you do?
Fail. Check out the current FHF winners if you're still under the impression that you need to be colored/popular to get your map noticed. Forgehub works just like real life - people aren't gonna comment on your thread out of charity. You need to advertise. Work the system. Establish a network of friends who can help you test your maps and spread the word. There's no such thing as a free lunch, dude.
As much as I hate to say it, unfortunately threads like this help people get their name out there, which gets them comments and the like. There are MUCH better names to get your name out there though: join the TG join the RH play alot of customs with other FH member if your map is playable: play on it with other FH members, then post a preview if your map is not playable: ask FH members for help, show other FH members, get new ideas, then post a preview Post on OTHER peoples maps
DavidJCobb said it best. When I look at a map, I first decide which maps to look at based upon their thumbnail. Ever since Affinity by GodlyPerfection came out, I am only really attracted to maps that display clear Forerunner architecture. If I see that in a thumbnail even a little bit I will look at the thread. Then if I see it or something of significant interest, I will download it to forge it and see how they did some thing on the map, to learn what they did, and to do a quick analysis on the spawning. I do the latter, because there are a lot of forgers that still don't know how Respawn Zones work. Then if the map is a real hit on aesthetics, I will comment on it. If any of the preceding is NOT true, I never get back to them. That is because I just don't have time and their map just aint worth the effort. In fact, you can tell a lot about how much a person thinks of a map based upon their feedback. And the opposite is true - you can tell how little a person thinks of a map based upon the lack of feedback. If I don't feedback, it is because the map does not have Forerunner architecture or it really lacks in other ways. I view and even download only to give up on commenting because it had some really bad aspects to it and wasn't worth the reply after i reviewed. The only exception is in a few rare instances where someone would feedback about how REALLY BAD a map is. But then they really do wrong by doing that.
Like Fritster said. As long as you can acknowledge your mistakes, then your future design will be an improvement. When I started, I realized that no one would guide me. I had to learn everything through trial and error. Luckily for you, there are some helpful people on this site. You have to find them and PM them a request for feedback.
I see what your saying man but it's nobodies' fault, just unlucky. I used to get mad when moderators/loyals maps got more replies just because of their rank, but in the end you can solve this by making more friends and playing your map with them.
To give a contrary point to the "populars" only getting comments on their maps, the very first map I posted on this site managed to get a fair few replies very quickly. I suppose I was just very lucky, but even though it didn't get many downloads, I got some decent feedback. Same for the second map I posted, but it was mainly constructive criticism that led me to nearly completely re-do the map. Even though I didn't really hit the mark with it again afterwards, I still managed to get some more comments on it. The first one was just a straight 'finish map to posting on Forge Hub' affair, without much prior testing (and the testing that was done was with me and one other person), the second map was submitted to RH with about as much testing, and RH was, as I requested, brutal. This led me to rethink my designs about maps and the way they worked. The map I submitted to the $5K Budget Contest went through extensive testing with TG, and by myself and a few others, and TGs help was extremely helpful. It wouldn't have been at the level it was now if I didn't get any testing done on it with external sources, and giving it to TG seemed to have a bit of a word-of-mouth effect, as it's gotten more downloads than any of my previous maps. So I'll admit networking does help people to start to recognise your maps, it's not always the case, a la, my first two maps. And yeh, bitching about not getting any attention doesn't help your cause much, because people will form a negative opinion of you from that point on and your chances of getting your name out there is severely hampered. My advice would be to post on other Forging sites as well, not just this one. I don't because I'm a lazy jerk, but I know it works for other people.
