I'm thinking about making a foundry game where the map is wide open and everyone has brute shots. The brute shot is hard to use at a long range, but if you slow player speed down it should be much more useful, and FUN. I noticed that lobbing brute shots downard at enemies is much more fun then when the target is on equal ground, so there will be plenty of elevated areas. Power drains will also be widely available to discourage zerging. Instead, players would be best off using certain points of the map for its defensive/offensive value. I'm also thinking only about a team mech game, with symetrical sides. Basically, it'll be an arena with a contested area in the middle and a base on each end. The biggest challenge, besides creating an interesting tactical battlefield, would be selling the idea of a reduced movement speed and the fact that it's all about the brute shot. The brute shot ISN'T a favorite of most people... but with the slow projectile speed, it's definitely a one of a kind weapon... and coupled with a slowed movement speed, I think I'd be a winning combination. Also, I'm thinking that the best use of custom powerups would be a 5 second speed burst and maybe even a reduced gravity. Would anyone play this, or maybe you have your own mech ideas?
To be honest I doubt it would catch on. It's worth trying out, but really I'd say people wouldn't much like to be slowed down. If you made the arena interesting enough then it could be good. How about custom power-ups which restore normal speed for a short time. You could try using grav lifts and teleporters to keep the pace up a little and allow players to travel around the map quicker. Try it.
I would say that it is definetely an interesting concept. I like mallet's idea of having power ups restore speed. Also, put alot of brute spike grenades on the map for added fun. It would be dificult to pull off, but you might just be able to make this fun.
AZN had a gametype that was similar to armored core, it was like flying around if u were a mech and stuff.... I dont know about this idea though
Thank you for inspiration. When I am on Halo, I will make a gametype called "Mechs" where everyone goes at 75% speed, and have Brute Shots and Beam Rifles. :squirrel_rocking:
My thoughts exactly. It's a tuff sell but I know there is great potential for the long range brute shot, just has to be found. My pleasure (just don't make it better than mine, lol) (oops, didn't see your post.) I didn't know mechs could fly, I thought they only had jump boosters. The reason why low gravity isn't part of the original concept is because then everyone is jumping around to be harder target to hit but I'd rather they be seeking cover instead. I'm not sure what AZN's map is like, but it sounds like its something pretty different. I'll see if I can find the name of it.
Armored Core is basically Mechwarrior and Chromehounds on crack... it is more fast pace, and you are in the air for most of the match (Depending on your AC of course). It is extremely different from Mechwarrior and this gametype. Please continue to speculate on the ore old school version of Mechs, while I screw around with the newer, faster, and funner mechs . Btw, if you do beam rifles and brute shots, I will never use the bruteshot. I'm sure many will agree.
I agree with AZN's post above. No one will use the brute shot and will be to slow. You've got a good idea, but you need to improve it.
I didn't say anything about a beam rifles, d3v did. If he wants to try that out I'd recommend 1 human sniper in the middle with no spare clips and a long respawn. I've already got my 2nd weapon in mind, as well as other revisions to the map, just not saying anything yet
I don't understand Oh btw... I've got a more complete concept now which adds more gameplay and also alleviates the slow issue in a better way than the speed boost idea from the OP. I'll be making a rough design tonight on my gamertag: Syzygy14. Hopefully by tonight I'll have a playable gametype that shows the basic idea but idk. and Gravedigger, thanks for the inspiration!
