Back in my day we had to walk uphill in the snow to get the flag. Then we'd have to walk uphill back to our base with it. All while our moving picture box was split 4 ways

Here are some tips from me, the greatest scrapper of all time:

1). DO YOUR LIGHTING AND COLORS FIRST. All you nubs forging with default colors listen up. Build a portion of the map and experiment with skyboxes, filters, color palettes, rocks and terrain types before you start building or you'll waste time changing them later. Obviously if you're building a block out and you don't have any idea what you want, you shouldn't worry about it. If this was a real editor, we'd be able to change all of that instantly and load different rock assets, but lolForge and its backwards logic.

I've posted this before, but here's a color wheel

2). NATURE IS ORGANIC, BUT NOT RANDOM. The secret to doing terrain is to make it look like the geological environment that it is in. Make sure lines of a cliff flow together, terrain hugs and clumps up around your walls, rocks that topple over due to erosion aren't just haplessly placed, etc. Obviously this ties into the sediment you are using as well. Barrens rock is often eroded by rivers, whereas Asteroid and Tidal rocks tend to be volcanic. And Alpine rocks are best used for rolling hills. All you need to do is ask yourself how the terrain would have formed.

3.) FRAME YOUR AREAS OF INTEREST. This technique is used to balance negative space with detail and draw the player's eye to where other players will be (in other words, where you can get shot from). This is especially important when everything is the same color or darkness. It can be as simple as making the rocks surrounding a structure jut out a little lower than others, the wall on the other side of a door more detailed than the walls beside it, making the shape of a path different when it goes somewhere else, or adding some light to illuminate it.

4.) STOP USING WHITE POINT LIGHTS EVERYWHERE. If your map has a natural light source, use it to create ambient light on your map. Ambient light is the light that fills a space; it bounces off of floors and walls, or it can be absorbed, scattered or difused by the air or the surface. This is of course best used with local light sources like fixtures or torches, and then you can paint different areas with other colors. If you enclose your map in a box of chromas, floors or terrain pieces, you can turn off all of the shadows and have complete control over where you put your lights. Spotlights around corners can mimic cast shadows with this method.

(Note that the skybox and canvas affect the shadows inside the chromabox. In other words, don't bother chromaboxing on Barrens.)

5). STOP PUTTING RIFLES ALL OVER 2v2 MAPS. Fighting 2 players with BRs and Carbines off of spawn is not fun when they have more range, more auto aim and more rounds to shoot you with.

6). SPAWN POINTS DON'T HAVE TO BE SAFE. First of all, it's Halo and this game has traditionally had shitty spawns. But more importantly, your spawns need to give players options, and sometimes that means putting it in a place that isn't ideal. This also works as a buffer for the spawn engine, because if a closer, less safe spawn is influenced by the engine, it has more variables to work with as opposed the furthest away spawn point (and of course, that works in reverse). I'm not a spawn guru and most of this is trial and error, but watching people build entire new back routes for "safe spawning" makes me question humanity.

7). IF YOU'RE TESTING TO FIGURE OUT IF SOMETHING IS BALANCED, YOU'VE ALREADY ****ED UP.
You should know if a player will camp an area or if it's difficult to flush them out, or if a sightline is too powerful/too exposed, and what not before you waste everyone's time in a lobby. You aren't going to find every issue on your own, but a basic understanding of how players are going to control 2/3rds of the map and where passive players are going to play when they're behind or close in score will let you make proactive decisions. And it depends on your intended gametype as well. If they can play an objective and not be seen by respawning players until it's too late, then you dun ****ed up.

That's all I got for now.

This is the only one I might take issue with. It's true for those of us who've been playing core Halo game types for over a decade, or designing and testing competitive levels for a few years. There are plenty of people getting into Halo or Forge that I wouldn't expect would be able to do this though. If you're not sure, you SHOULD test to find out. Don't assume you know how your map will play unless you have a metric **** ton of experience building and testing maps, or playing competitively at a high level.

If you need to test, then test, but here's the key to testing: Don't judge how the map plays based upon your experience playing it, and don't make rash decisions based upon other people's feedback if it's focused on their individual experience during the test. I've played in so many play tests where the players and the forger were looking at all the wrong things. People give way too much attention to the time they got spawn killed, and end up missing the really important things they should be looking for.

Watch gameplay from a wide view first (overall flow and player movement tendencies). Once you've got a grasp on those and are satisfied with them you can begin looking at how the map plays from an individual perspective. The individual perspective ultimately has very little importance in the grand scheme of things though.

I honestly haven't listened to feedback since I realized some people play with their TVs off.

I don't disagree. It takes a while to learn to be proactive, and testing if you aren't sure how the map will play in the end (especially if it's a weird map) will give you helpful info. It was more related to obvious stuff that you should be able to weed out on your own.

Man America is such a ****ing stupid country. How is the only country without national healthcare now trying to give 20+ million LESS people health insurance?

One of those movies about nuking washington needs to happen.

Is it so silly to want to be responsible for our own well-being, as opposed to having the government force us to contribute to others' payments?

I've researched Canada's healthcare because it's commonly referred to in debate. It's a very flawed system. I don't believe people with money should lose the opportunity to get premium healthcare in order to pay for those who can't.

I'm pretty sure the 600$ billion we spend on our military to fight false threats our CIA created is way more important then keeping the people who live in America healthy. It's about priorities man, don't be stupid. The US ARMY KICKS A$$!

we're all tax livestock anyway, but this isn't the right forum to be complaining about destructive Stockholm-syndrome-type relationships with large, flailing, and uninterested pseudo-corporations :^)

speaking of which, anyone got any stock tips? I'm looking for somewhere safe to put my petrodollars, because the banks are so utterly crippled by regulations and fiat currencies that they aren't safe havens from inflation anymore

I really don't give a damn about Canada (or other countries) and their "free" health care. I believe you should work for your ****. Some people don't get it. When you walk into a grocery store and see some dead beat ass guy with 6 kids from 4 different baby momma's buying a case of beer & cigarettes with cash but loading the f**k down with groceries on food stamps, then putting them in his Cadillac with 30" rims and 15" speakers bitching about how he needs Obamacare to pay for his health but doesn't want to work. Wants to sell drugs instead. F**k off with that **** & get a damn job you f**king loser. Support yourself and your family you worthless ass. You don't give a **** or you'd still be with your 1st baby momma being a father figure for that child.

All the lazy ass people wanting handouts make me sick.

And I agree with most of your "conspiracy" stuff @SaltyKoala but whether you call it freedom or not we still have it made in the shade compared to 99% of the other countries in the world.

If everyone would step the f**k up and do their part and we limit all these handouts we give to every Tom, ****, and Mary of any race then we could be even better.
