What i meant by irrelevant was that regardless of the mechanics, you have to make something that works for them. Does slower movement and kill times restrict what types of layouts will work? Sure. But, that’s what level design is: creating playspaces that compliment the game’s mechanics.

My recent map had significant pace and balance issues at first. I couldve blamed the game and given up, but i acknowledged what choices i made with the layout that was causing the issues, and eventually was able to alleviate those issues. As long as you refuse to acknowledge what youre doing to stagnate movement, it will continue to be an issue on your maps.

While picking up health does help to incentivize movement, its not the only aspect that does it. Regardless of mechanics and pickups, the maps themselves still need to encourage players to cycle it.

I agree with you about Halo 5 mechanics, and ive ranted about all the same things. But, as long as its a Halo 5 map, it should play well for Halo 5 mechanics.

I understand that. But if you want your cool looking stuff to play well, you have to put just as much effort into how it plays as you do into making it look cool.

Stagnant movement has never been an issue on my maps. Again, I know how to get players to move and I know how to balance encounters.

I just don't like doing it for some maps because it devalues them. Some maps are built in such a way that forcing movement means hacking away at their fundamental design. At a certain point, I have to concede that the only problem with the design is that it's built for Halo 5, and unfortunately it seems like that list is growing lately.

I'm at the point where I've done all I can with the maps I want to make. They just don't work in Halo 5, and if they do, they're too expensive.

Sometimes I feel like you guys think I'm building boxes with walls and ramps. Not to make excuses but I'm literally building 360 degree Campaign spaces, and some of them just don't work for competitive maps. At that point it's fighting against the budget. Salty is the only other person who hits the issues I do, but most of Salty's maps are very minimal. I mean I can literally blow 25% of my budget on staircases.

I wish more people were attempting themed spaces like this. Salty never publishes his stuff and I'm too much of a perfectionist to compromise. But because of that, these maps just stay hidden and it bothers me. Like how do we not have a roman/greek map yet?

I love how you assume you 2 are the only ones doing this.

Everyone likes talking about their own ability all of the sudden

while we're on the topic, I make a really good cookies. They're so good that I find myself consistently in awe, like the cookies are just being channeled through me.

If I'm not already the best cookie baker in the community, I will be very soon

Mind posting a pic of you in a school blazer with a pink wig on for me? IDK I just feel like it'd fit you for some reason. I'm sure you know how it is these days, it's for research purposes and what not.

I know other people are forging and happen to not be as vocal with their creative process as I am. But Salty is the only person I know who consistently makes solid maps with a thematic identity. And they aren't just "normal maps" with theme skins; most of his maps could be actual Campaign levels.

It is just frustrating to see all these potential map ideas - and I usually get the art direction looking correct - but then it takes me forever to come up with a design that doesn't get wrecked by budget or something else, so I'm just sitting on a bunch of themes. Maybe I should just make everything public.

Why do you know the fabric isle at walmart is always empty

I forget who posted this forever ago. Why hasn't anyone made some kind of scum and slum pirate/village dock yet? Plenty of ways to simplify the wood without killing your budget.

Halo 5 sucks etc but there's SO MANY MAPS that are doable in this game that still haven't been made.

I almost can't even listen to the Halo 1 and 2 soundtracks because the nostalgia is overwhelming and I want to cry

Yeah, I feel that. I've got a lot of potential good theme ideas stockpiled myself. Just can't bring myself to put them together because my layout skills aren't up to par for this game. Just feels like it's be a waste of a theme. This has a lot to do with me not really playing much of Halo 5 besides forging. H6 I'm gonna take the time to get the hang of the game so I feel more comfortable making a map layout worthy of the themes.

I also agree with what you said about no one making Halo themed maps really. You'd think it'd be easier to throw something interesting together with the assets provided but people tend to stick to that boring human industrial theme or cityscape of Halo. They still **** that up and it just looks like forge blocks

I turned it into Lockout's obese sister lol

It needs to be heavily scaled down (remove a whole floor big) , and the light bridge needs to be reworked, but I remember Xandrith saying something nice-ish about it

I ****ing loved placing health packs in Reach! They were just a nice tool to get people moving. Even though CE doesn't go all the way with health pickups and still has the shields, I like how you have that nagging incentive to go find health because you know you will be at a slight disadvantage next fight if you don't. It's all very well saying it's the job of a map designer to incentivise movement, but good mechanics and sandbox design should do that anyway, giving the map designer as much freedom as possible.

If you design for Halo 5 it makes it even harder to finish anything. I've been having a lot more fun with classic style settings, seeing some of the maps people have made for Evolved is refreshing. The maps I hope to finish are going to be designed for my own personal mode similar to Evolved. I've simply left H5 base movement as is, got rid of all abilities, and increased health to 200%. With these settings I can make classic scale maps where the health increase nerfs grenades, makes melee 3 hit (to balance the bullshit lunge range), and helps nerf power weapons, without affecting the pistols perfect kill time yet making body shots weaker.

For anyone who wants to actually finish a map and hates Halo 5, I recommend not worrying about standard or expected settings in the community and just design for settings without as much bullshit to account for. You likely wont make a perfect mode, but it will be way more fun than standard, and since you can then build for classic scale you typically need less pieces to finish the layout, leaving more budget for art.

So I was brainstorming on goats idea for a cave with man cannons and came up with a pretty "interesting" teleporter system that revolves around Ryu from street fighter being one key launch area, and at the bottom a giant octopus that shoots you as if you were ink.

Ryu has the high ground so he'll get less movement options, but ol octopussy being at the bottom means he's gonna need to make some ****ery happen with multiple routes up top.

I have no doubt I make the greatest cinnamon rolls on forgehub. This isn't pride, it's just the facts.

Now that I've proved all you wrong with my reasoning above, I hope you all learn to accept my alpha cinnamon rolls, that I actually have no proof I've ever even made. I do however, have these half baked/burnt cinnamon rolls made yesterday that taste like **** - but these do not represent my current baking level. I have improved unbelievably and exponentially since then.

I also, will not be providing my perfect cinnamon rolls for anyone to taste. But they are the best, much better than the other chefs here who have been baking for 10 years longer than I.

My past burnt cinnamon rolls, are actually very good as well. If you disagree please write a thesis and supporting points as to why they do not taste good, to which I will promptly discredit and attribute to my intention that I WANTED them to taste of grease and pan flakes. Please allow me to explain why charred grease bits actually taste good.

Now that I've explained why these horrendous cinnamon rolls actually taste good I trust you can all see it my way :) If you disagree, it's because you do not recognize the reasoning I have clearly laid out above. Anything that may or may not have offended you, you can attribute to my great sense of humor and sarcasm that reads in exactly the same tone as my normal conversation.

I just hate it when people hype up their cinnamon rolls and they turn out to be just biscuits with butter and cinnamon on them. Like, really dry biscuits.

and who the **** thought adding raisins in them would be a good idea??

(forger 1) I like the way store-bought taste, but the way I add my own cinnamon makes them levels above whatever mush anyone could bring to the table

(forger 2) I gather the finest ingredients from all around the world, and make the most beautiful desserts. My oven breaks every time I try to cook something, however, and everything ends up in the trash.

(forger 3) my dumplings taste like ****, but it's better than any other **** you'll ever taste

(forger 4) I make whatever chef tells me to
