I'm in the market for an external hard drive, looking for a good 3TB drive that I'm going to partition (1TB for my laptop backup and 2TB for general media storage).

I'm trying to keep costs low, thus the two that come to mind are the WD My Book Essential and the Seagate Backup Plus

    What brands to y'all prefer?

Amazon.com: Seagate Backup Plus 3 TB USB 3.0 Desktop External Hard Drive (STCA3000101): Computers & Accessories

Amazon.com: Western Digital My Book Essential 3 TB USB 3.0/2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive: Computers & Accessories

Well, I've got a WD and it has served me well thus far. Haven't ever had a Seagate, so I'm not sure what they're like. I suppose you should just go with whichever one looks more reliable, more aesthetically pleasing, or is better value. There's not much in the way of function for an external HDD apart from storing data, so I guess it really just comes down to the latter selling point.

That WD is littered with partition bugs in the reviews

i read bad things about WD drives all the time, but my externals have served me very well for both mac and windows OS's

my portable usb seagate drive though, its like the best thing i ever bought.
