House approves CISPA despite last-minute push by opponents | Privacy Inc. - CNET News

"It won't pass" says guy in dream nothing bad ever happens land.

Anyway, the White House threatened to veto the bill so at least that could happen.

Now I'm not completely one sided on this. I do realize that even if it is not vetoed, not much would change. There were all ready all sorts of privacy violating legislation that has been passed years ago (including the Patriot Act) all in the name of stopping internal terrorism. We aren't privy to what is being gathered by the government or how successful that legislation was at doing anything (I'm sure whenever those bills are called into attention they are quick to point out "successes" within them) but for the most part 99.9% of people aren't affected and people go about their business none the wiser.

As I said to chris, the problem isn't with how significant the impact of the legislation is, the problem is the precedent that is set in allowing this kind of bill. The bill adds another layer of regulation to the internet which is a very complex structure. I can hope the bill ends up either getting vetoed or end up having little to no real effect but at the same time there is always that possibility it gets abused and I start getting phone calls/text messages/targeted ads from advertising companies partnered with social networks who gave my information up because some dumbass lumped a whole bunch of profiles together when the government asked for potential security threats.
