Pretty simple debate focussed on this current issue. U.S. Attorney General, Eric Holder, has announced the administrations plans to bring 5 known 9/11 terrorists to the U.S., specifically New York city, to be tried for their crimes using our nation's justice system. This is part of a larger goal of the administration to close Guantanamo Bay entirely and move away from the military tribunals that have been used by the previous administration. Should the accused terrorists be brought here? Should we prosecute them using our criminal courts or a military tribunal? Should Gitmo be closed or remain open?
Tbh, who really cares where they get tried? Sure, if its in New York it'll come with some minor moral meaning to both parties, but its not like they're gonna go on a field trip to Ground Zero. Throw 'em in jail (or more realistically, execute them, which is so hypocritical), and get it over with.
No, they should not be tried in NYC. Mainly because of how our judicial system works. Since the same terrorists struck in NYC, as well as the pentagon.. the crimes were contained to two states. Therefore, it should be heard under the supreme court. That's why we have the federal government, to deal with problems that span past a single state's jurisdiction. I'm sure that if Maryland took New York to court over this matter, the supreme court would have a similar ruling.
The Supreme Court is not the only federal court, of course they will be tried in federal court in NY. That's not the issue. The big objection is that it's a civilian court, not a military one. The terrorists in question were not operating as a military element of any sovereign nation. Their actions were crimes by a private organization, not a military action. Holder's decision is appropriate. The Republicans are asserting that they should be treated like military enemies in order to legitimize our waging war against them. Congress has never legally declared a war in Afghanistan because doing so requires a foreign sovereign government to declare it against (Congress hasn't formally declared war since WWII)
**** NO. They should not be tried in New York. I mean, are you ****ing kidding me? That's just like rubbing salt in someone's wound. There's no reason for it. Do it in like Oregon or some ****. Also, taking them back to New York is just going to cause chaos. All the New Yorkers will be going crazy with protesting and ****. Going to be total gridlock all over the place. And it will just give the terrorist groups another opportunity and date to try something. Is our government ****ing retarded? Terrorists don't deserve a trial; they deserve a ****ing firing squad. Plus, iRaynne, you're from Jersey.
I'm sorry but everyone deserves a trial. It's pretty much a cornerstone of our society. Or are we terrorists ourselves?
There isn't anything you can do that will make them feel sorry for what they did. There is no need to bring them to NY for their trial. Unless they can prove themselves to be insane they will be getting a lethal injection. Something that I truly believe is to good a way to die for them.
All i can say is thank god Predicide is here. You guys are missing the major points, and as always, diving into the obvious that yes, this is 9/11, yes this is an attrocity and yes these people will be punished. The points are that NY, in my opinion, should have the right to hold the trial because NY is the city where the majority of the events took place. In the same way that Iraq wished to prosecute Saddam Hussein for his actions. It's more than obvious that military tribunals are, although straight to the point, harsh, corrupt and short-sighted. This Attourney General wishes to move back to Federal prosecution systems, which are not only fair, but overlooked and best of all public (public knowledge, not in-public). And Gitmo is undoubtably the most horrifying location on this planet. And you guys should be proud of that. If you look at those images, the right one, if i remember rightly, was an image of supposedly when the man was 'found' by Americans, even though he had already been tortured for weeks by American controlled operatives in Jordan, illegaly.
They should definitely be tried in military court not at the scene in which this barbarity occurred. I say this because I think that justice has a better chance of prevailing in a military court. Meaning they will execute these men quicker than our courts will. If the trials are here in the US, maybe people will again see that our country is very much at war against terrorism, and we must be vigilant. So, I am a little divided on this issue. I believe that one of the main reasons Barack Obama is now our President is because of his promises of ending the war. This appealed so much to Americans who were tired of war and blood.
You kind of missed the point. They could be tried in a Federal Court elsewhere, without need of a Military presence. This is exactly what Hussein recieved, and there was much controversy over giving him a trial at all, and not just shooting him there and then. Personally, i feel that it's more barbaric to kill someone because they are 'bad', than to kill for a cause you feel so rightly in. Your at war against poverty of resources. And many of Obamas ideals will contradict what most Americans will see as the 'right direction' although in the long term it is the moral direction. Also considering you have been at war in the middle-east for close to 20 years with little resolve, it is unlikely to be over soon.
I also think it should some kind of military court, NOT public. Its idiotic. the Nuremberg trial wasn't in the middle of a concentration camp for a reason, the same applies here. its unnecessary, and I think will turn into quite a circus. However, if they get the death penalty they should be stoned to death at ground zero by a crowd of new yorkers. Its common practice in their part of the world.
Im glad you brought that up, It seems everyone is ready to hang them before they even see a court. I think these guys deserve a fair trial just like everyone else because they are innocent until proven otherwise. Dont jump on the bandwagon just yet.
