Quarantine Zone

The following is the story for one of my future maps.

Earth. It has become war-ravaged. Nations have been involved in a struggle that could be considered virtually endless. First trade has stopped across sea-borders, famine spread, diseases that were once stopped have spread and could not be cured. Countries have fought against others they never would have imagined. History has become vague in these recent years, and not many people know what how this treacherous calamity has truly been caused. Some say that war is not always a terrible things. They say war can help local economies out of some of the most horrible inflation.

This is not one of those wars.

Nations have been locked in a stale-mate that has gone nowhere. Fighting has erupted all over the world, even in some of the most unexpected places. Nuclear bombs have been launched, despite prior treaties and acts. This has caused multiple nations to launch world-wide EMPs that create flight impossible. Bombs can't be launched either, since they can't sustain the power to fly across the globe. This may have been the final step in separating the world. Warfare has changed. There isn't necessarily as much fighting, but nations have been in more fear than ever before in the war. New technologies have been created for killing.

Scientists all over the world have been competing on making the deadliest diseases; and often times the cures to help prevent them. People all over the globe have been vaccinated multiple times, and now creating diseases is almost an art. Since most diseases have become null to humans, scientists are working harder than ever; simply to kill. However, the effects of these diseases have become a little out-of-hand.

One particular disease was intended to form some sort of parasitic connection with its host's nervous system, causing a brain injury a very rapid pace. When its connects to the host, the human is considered killed after about 24 hours. However, some have been reanimated by this virus. The virus at first could only be spread through physical contact, and could only control its host for a short period of time, usually a few hours. The virus was unleashed shortly after its discovery upon a nearby nation.

Within a few weeks, the nation was literally killed off.

The virus has evolved. The nation was isolated off from the world. All contact was lost, even from spies from enemy countries in that region. All within a week.

This war was deemed... nonessential by most people. They were aware of the larger threat. The war faded away, but so did contact with other nations. The virus spread through the world like wildfire, claiming more lives, becoming more intelligent and deadly.

Special Quarantine Zones were laid out all over the world. These proved effective at repelling the virus. Excellent defenses around each Zone could protect the people inside. Makeshift villages developed in these Zones, which usually prospered.

Despite the efficiency of these Zones, the virus still managed to claim a vast majority of Zones across the world.

A protocol had to be followed. 3% of the remaining Zones would be rescued and be brought to a safe haven, away from the virus.

The others, they were left to die.

Luckily, your Zone was one of the 3%of the chosen. A transport vehicle is on the way. Unfortunately, just 6 days before the rescue, something went wrong. The virus somehow penetrated your defenses. Its up to you to defend your Zone from the inside until your rescued.
