    Description

Platypus is an extremely experimental design featuring many techneques not widely used before. When Ark kind of flopped, I realized that 2v2 mapmaking isn't exactly my forté. But, hey. It was my first competitive map. Like, ever. And although I wholeheartedly believe that I had learned something from it, I thought I'd come about mapmaking with another tactic. When I plan out maps ahead, they go to hell pretty quickly. I guess I just can't estimate the flow patterns on paper, or at least not as well as I'd like to. Platypus was conceived as I tried to emulate a spinoff of the watery flooring design seen in Lux. I was hoping to derrive some sort of checkerboard floor pattern for later use, and before I knew it, it began to look more and more like a map. The design kind of twists into itself, and may take a minute to fully understand. The teleporter sends players to the lift, covanent crates always have a sticky between them, certain parts of the map use cover that protects players only from headshots, thus blocking their return fire. Areas I didn't want to be camped I made awkward to fight from. I know it seems kind of gimmicky on paper, but it works surpirsingly well in game, because it's not an "up in your face" kind of concept. I myself was first skeptical about many of the concepts I applied, but at the end of the day, I'm extremely satisfied with where this went.

Well, there you have it. I'll try to update this with some thankies and a testable download link soon enough, but I want to solidify some of the edits first.

I know I enjoy playing here (though Flamingo apparently hates my play style.) There are a of of great tac-jumps to be found, and the new concepts are certainly interesting, though I didn't see a huge change to gameplay from a few of them. I'm still not thrilled about the soft kill in the playable area (there is one on top of the 1 x 1 panks right?) but overall I like the map quite a bit. A very unique style seems to emanate from everything in it.

I don't think kill zones are ever a good idea in the playable area. I don't remember seeing any when you showed me the map but that was a while ago. I hope I can play this some time soon.

Holy beaver-duck-animal, this looks amazing. I actually got exited just seeing the first image. Next time we are both on we have to play this, I assume it's a 1v1? Now, im not really seeing a lot of unique forms here though. Sure, your forging style is quite interesting and the map has more twists and turns than most, but it isnt striking me as a map with new concepts- but I also have not yet played this. By any chance is this designed loosely after the awfully made map that we played once? The rough draft one? Anyway Im looking forward to playing this. A lot.

    Tis gone.

    And thanks. ;]

Yeah, like I said, the concepts aren't really all up in your face, and they'd be impossible to illustrate using images. They aren't new as much as uncommon. Also, this has nothing to do with that bucket of crap. Nothing. Absolutely nothing.

Can't wait to get a game with ye.

While playing (and in a way differently from Shoe's melee-spamming style) I found I rather liked this map. The wee catwalks with the head-only cover were interesting, and used in just the right amount, as they are something that could grow tiresome if they were all over the map. I found the lowest level of the map to be a bit dull, but everything else was quite interesting. I also like how, given the gametype, the magnum is really worth picking up, as the magnum has always been my weapon of choice in reach. overall, this map makes me happy and more or less tastes like bacon.

So I just played this with you. and you kicked my arse. You know my thoughts- I love this map. My one issue is that ugly entrance to the place with the grid and the 1 way sheild. I would still work on that if you can, it just looks so out of place and bad compared to the rest of the map. in other news I am eating a junior mint. =D

The name of this map is probably your worst, yet.

Idk if you're high when you come up with these names, or you think it's funny, but either way it boggles my mind why you'd name your map Platypus. ;)

Having said that, I'm really liking the flooring. I'm sure you were trying to go with some interesting and very creative ideas for walling and flooring.

I'm glad you decided to post a pre-view because I was very anxious to see what you were working on. Now I can see that you've been working on a nice little project here.

The only little thing that bothers me is the way your railings don't connect (As seen in pic # 2 and 3) Is there any way you could connect those so it doesn't look as sloppy?

Other than that, this looks really good. Keep it up.

Railings like that are a problem because of the beveled edge. The only good solution is to have another object there like a column to cover that up, but that would clutter the area somewhat. I like the name and don't think it should change.

Are you, of ALL people, actually questioning me naming a map Platypus? I'd think you'd have remembered something from when you had LIVE, budd. ;] You're a good chunk of what got me to finally post this preview.

And the railings do connect... These are just semi-old pics.

I think my favorite thing about this map is that I don't have to convince people that they had fun, unlike something else I spawned.

I'm not sure I know what you mean, but don't get me wrong, the name is hilarious and I like it. I just find it kind of odd.

Anyways, if you happen to have time to take new screens so I can see any changes you've made, that'd be great.

Sounds interesting, though it's really hard to grasp the map's general layout by the pics. It'd be nice to walk around the map and take it for a spin.

Since you've said the pics are old, I was wondering if the brace large and tunnel large still connect like that (as displayed in pic 4)? It looks odd. It'd look heaps better if you put another brace large to cover up the tunnel large continuing that little "brace large border" you seem to have up in that room. Having rooms stick to a consistent pattern helps to really distinguish them and makes them feel less like a bunch of blocks randomly thrown about and more like actual rooms, imo.

Having tested this map probably the most, I gotta say I think it's your best attempt yet. The textures are pretty awesome, and it's a fun quick layout. BTW, damn you, you beat me. Temple will be up soon....
