Been a while.... not sure what inspired me to actually come and post... i miss you guys

Flash fiction assignment for Creative Writing....

Prompt:
Create a piece using...
A stray dog
Someone named Bert
Three vocabulary words from a list (in this story: glabrous, effete, demure)
A doughnut

It must begin with the following..
"Not being able to sleep, I decided to get a cup of coffee at the all-night diner."

Not being able to sleep, I decided to get a cup of coffee at the all-night diner. Phillie's diner was a quaint little place on the corner across from my flat. At night, the place was run by a spry old man with a glabrous head hidden under his little paper cap. He greeted me cheerfully as I walked in the door.
"'Evening Bert." He said.
"Hello, Sam," I replied, looking around the effete place, "quiet night?"
"Eh, not many people out and about these nights."
I grunted in agreement and ordered a cup of coffee and a donut. A mangy dog strolled past the low-silled windows, and the only other presence was a demure old man at the end of the bar. The low hum of a cab in the distance, growing steadily louder as it neared. Sam approached with my food, but stopped to peer out of the window, for the car's hum was turning to a roar. The headlights appeared and the vehicle screeched to a stop outside Phillie's.
The man in the corner muttered something about the Mafia and shambled off out the diner's back door. A man in a fedora stepped out of the car, and a woman in a scarlet ball gown emerged from the opposite side. The stray dog came running towards the couple, wagging its tail as the man walked purposefully towards the diner. Sam slapped down my donut and coffee and shuffled back to the coffee machine.
"… Should have everything right here," I heard the man say as he opened the door, "Ol' Sam keeps it all safe for me." The man walked up to the bar as Sam turned around as if he had just realized someone had entered the shop.
"'Ello there, what can I do for you?" Said Sam, his accent becoming stronger than ever. The man's eyes roamed the shop, then focused on me. I avoided his gaze and he turned to Sam once more. An unspoken question was asked and the man seemed to relax. I chanced a look down the bar. The woman was eyeing me suspiciously, but the man seemed to very comfortable there.
"Sam, some food for the dog?" the man said, glancing out the window at the mutt outside, still looking at this stranger endearingly. Sam grunted and went into the back of the shop, returning with a bowl of dog food. The stranger walked back to the door and held it open while the dog marched in as if he owned the place. Sam exited the bar to place the food on the floor, and the dog wolfed it down.
The diner was silent for a moment, save for the crunching and smacking of the dog. The man took Sam into the corner and words were exchanged. Sam approached me and put a hand on my shoulder.
"Bert, I'm sorry, but you've got to leave." He said seriously.
"Uh, sure, can I finish– no? Well, ok."
"And take the dog with you," said the man as I stood up to leave. I nodded obediently and grabbed my donut and cap.
"Leave the donut, Bert."
Confused and scared, I put the donut back on the bar and moved towards the door. I opened it and the dog pushed past and bolted off into the night. A final glance back showed Sam and the woman staring blankly after me as the man dug through his pockets for an unknown object.
I still can't sleep.
