Ostium Before I begin with the design and stuff, I'd like to point out that this map was supposed to be a co-forge between Rho and I named Obduro. Obduro is a Latin word meaning final or last. Rho wanted to name it this because it was going to be his last map. This never happened, but he still wanted the name in case he came back and made his final map in the future. So I wanted a similar name that began with 'O' and was preferably Latin. I found Ostium, which fit pretty well because it means "door" or "entrance," and the main aesthetic I had thought up for the map was a doorway. Anyways, moving on... I designed Ostium around a concept I'd seen used in a forge map, Sequence, and in a Quake Live map, Trinity. A set up jumps over a central deathpit (or in Trinity's case, the bottom floor), allowing you to cross the map at this risk of falling in. One problem I had while drawing it out was that since I only wanted 3 sides connecting to the middle, the 4th always seemed disconnected. What I tried to do was to push people from the top floor against the flow of the rest of the map into that room to force encounters there. And if all else fails, I placed a CPU in the seemingly disconnected area to try to force more conflicts to occur there. While designing Ostium, I wanted a 2-way teleporter between the area I thought would have the least traffic and the area opposite of it simply because I'd never seen a 2-way used in a way that didn't seem like you would only use it was a 1-way. I changed my mind during this and changed the teleporter system to a 1-way because I didn't want the map to be too easy to control by using the teleporters. I got rid of the lift that had previously taken you to the top floor, and put a receiver there instead. At the moment I'm working on spawns and weapons. Currently there is a CPU, mentioned above, a Grenade Launcher and a Sniper Rifle power weapon-wise. I'm not sure if it will be able to run any more than a 1v1, 2v2 will definitely be it's max. Anyways, thanks for taking a look, any feedback is welcome, blah blah blah. If you want to test just add me on xbl, I'll invite you sometime.
I really like what you did with the teleporter. You don't see that used often and it adds a nice aesthetic touch. And on the map I love the idea of a central pit as well as the custom powerup, although I would have thought an Overshield or Rocket Launcher would've been better. That is just my opinion I know many will disagree but anyway you did a great job.
The first and second pic remind me of Lux. It's probably nothing the same, though. This definitely looks cool. I was waiting for you to post a preview or a map and here it is. Your work always fascinates me, as you are one of the forgers I look to learn from. I'm loving the walls and the aesthetics throughout the map. The blue color scheme is also a nice color choice for the map. Wish I had a working xbox so I could check this out. Keep up the great forging.
Has been said many times now. The doors are very similar to the braces on Lux, but the doorway was inspired by Sentinel by Vyctoriouz (not sure of spelling) and Sir Toppum Hat from H3. I wanted 6 openings stacked on top of eachother like they did, but since that would look like crap from all the overlaying textures and the framerate would go crazy, I had to experiment and that's what I ended up with. lol. Thanks everyone else for the comments. Haven't tested yet so the weapons are still undecided and stuff. And yeah.
Not much to say, but I'll throw a ♥ in anyways. Sorry the forging thing never happened. Looks good dude.
