Im new to making forge maps, and i just want some begginer tips for things like getting ideas for maps and actually making good maps.
Everyone gets their ideas from different places but an easy place to get started is build what you know. Have a look around where you live pick something that looks cool and make it the centre-piece of your map. As fpr making good maps its all about how it plays you could make the best looking map ever but if it doesn't play well people won't like it my advice (which is in no way perfect) is to always keep how people are going to be engaging and moving throughout your map. Other that simply just building and iterating will help, the only way to become experienced is to go and get the experience haha
Refer to a map that you consider good. Ask yourself what design decisions contributed to its success, in your eyes. Try to replicate those traits, but with a different execution. Put yourself in the eyes of the player, and analyze all the potential scenarios a play space might provide. Listen to feedback. Don’t get attached to your creation. Be mentally flexible. Learn from every mis-step.
Make primitive blockouts with vertically and make sure you don't over scale your map. Make as many map ideas as you can and find a logical process in how you design it. From layouts, item placements, spawn balancing, theme and art style to name a few. Get feedback if at all possible and playtest your iterations. Reference other maps and incorporate good design principals into your builds. Create your maps with Halos mechanics in mind and structure your maps around player count and game types. Some people spend months on one map to implement techniques they pick up long the way but if you run out of ideas on a build get it to a payable state and start working on something new. Don't be afraid to delete bad maps and move on. Also learn to manage your piece count and consolidation techniques along with controlling your light budget with light bake toggles & preferred canvas selection. Be consistent in your theme and if the opportunity arises have others help forge key aspect on your maps to learn there process. Be active in sharing your maps; there are some forger on here that have been working their craft for years so take your time and don't stop forging. Good luck!
It can be helpful to figure out what type of map you want before making it (example: team slayer, 4v4,) in which you can design your map about what you want. Then, I like to personally think of a gimmick my map will have to make it more interesting whether it be an explosive dropping down to the middle of the map every 30 seconds or a door that opens when a team is near it but this is optional as you can still make good maps without this. You'll want to build a layout of the map first to get a scale of how it's going to play, size, height, etc so one you don't need to spend hours on a detailed section to fix it and two to spread out the detail later equally. After building the layout, it's nice to block off some sections with walls or ceilings but you can be creative with sightlines and cover which can help the uniqueness of the map. The final main step is to get the weapons, spawns, objectives and detail laid out but after that it really depends on what kind of building style you use (detailed, simplistic, technical, etc) and the environment you go for inside or outside.
