Anyone who plays matchmaking with me will know that my connection is rather unreliable. However, this isn't because of my ISP, my router or anything else like that. My actual connection speed is around 8mb/s which should work perfectly and does work perfectly on any game but Halo 3.

I've been trying to get to the bottom of this highly irritating problem for months now but every time I think I've fixed it, it reverts back.

    How does it lag?
When I go into a game, my connection will start perfectly, but after about 10 minutes will drop to yellow bar (the lower yellow bar not the 3/4 one). While at this stage the game will still be playable and my bullets will register as hitting however people will teleport slightly and the physics will lag. Vehicles become quite difficult to drive and I will lose most br fights.

If the game carries on, maybe a capture the flag big team were neither team can grab the flag, my connection will drop to one red bar. As soon as this happens I know it because all the vehicles, moveable objects and weapons vanish. People will teleport and walk in one direction and I have no chance of doing anything useful. At this stage I have to quit, for my own sake and for the sake of everyone else in the game. My lag apparently doesn't effect other people but I don't know whether they're just saying that to be nice :S.

    Possible Causes
As I said, I have been thinking about this for months so I have been able to gather up lots of possibilities as to what is causing this problem.

    Halo Disk:
I have searched around on google for a while and some people say that the disk might be broken. I have Halo installed to my HDDrive and am right now re-installing it. I'm not going as far as buying another disk unless someone can confirm this.

Network CCTV Camera on my house:
I don't know why this would create a problem however it seemed that whenever it was turned off my lag would stop. I reconfigured all the ip's in my house just to make sure there wasn't anything conflicting and it still didn't fix it. My dad also refuses to turn the camera off any more because of his motorbike which is inside the garage.

Me pulling host and.. something happening?:
Often, while my connection is still perfect it will switch to yellow bar after black screen. My connection has a good download and ping, but the upload is only 0.5mb/s, I'm thinking that possibly Halo chooses me as a good host and doesn't realise I can't upload for ****..

    ADSL 2.0
I can't confirm this, but I think our connection was upgraded to ADSL 2 round about when this trouble started. I don't actually know anything about this but my dad seems to think that, although it is faster on the whole, it's either not reliable or buggy being new.

Again, my connection is fine on all other games than Halo 3, even the Reach beta was lag free. I really need to fix this because I'm quitting a large proportion of my games, people are starting to question whether I'm worth putting up with and halo gets very very dull when guests can teleport behind you and claw your guts out...

This is a problem that I hope you can get fixed, it is pretty annoying when you have to back out of Big Team. Also, we aren't lying just to be nice, we do not actually experience any lag as a result of your lag.

I'm also experiencing a lag problem, but I think mine affects everybody in the game. Sometimes just randomly in the middle of a game my connection will go red bar for about 20 seconds and then go green bar again, I'm not sure why, though I have a suspicion that my sister is secretly downloading large quantities of Asian porn.

    If the other people are not experiencing the lag, it is 100% impossible that you are host. It means you arent able to download all of the data that the host is giving out, and your xboxs Halo 3 designated RAM space is full. There is a way to delete this which will free up that download space and most likely help with your lag, and this is how you do it;

"To clear the hard drive cache and prevent lag in Solo and Multiplayer mode, when starting the game, hold A + Up. Select "Yes" when you are asked if you want to clear the cache."

I am having this problem too, and its because of my wireless router. If i am host, my console is downloading a hella amount of data, then uploading a much smaller amount. My router attempts to block what it sees as a trojan horse stealing my info, or an unregistered computor stealing my interwebz by resetting itself. It usually lasts about a minute, commonly less, but rarely i get booted. Anyways its uncommon enough that i deal with it.

Right I've just done that, it makes a lot of sense and I'm quite confident that may have fixed it.

I had a friend who's internet used to die if the oven was turned on...

hahahaha tell your friend that its a short circuit probably. Thats awesome though lol. Apparently the oven hates technology more advanced than itself.
