A good friend of mine is a recovering alcoholic, he found religion, and it turned his life around. So I guess it was pretty smart of him to become a christian!
Actually, bears are omnivores. They are also one of the most intelligent creatures on the planet. The intelligence of Bears
I'm neither a man of science nor religion because I find it much more enjoyable to not have to deal with either sides bullshit.
I consider myself a Christian, but I don't consider myself religious. Religions are set up by man, thus I don't care to follow the extra rules set in place by said man. Faith is a personal thing, simply between you and God.
This threads going waaaay too fast... Anyway, this is an awesome thread. For once, Im actually seeing all sides of the story, and there are some interesting debates going on.
Just out of curiosity. Has anybody seen this before, or if you haven't, would you perhaps hazard a guess as to what it's trying to mock? It's pretty interesting.
It's mocking people's willingness to accept miracles as an explanation. I like it. "How did his cancer go into remission?" Scientist: "I don't know, but I want to study it and see if we can learn how to make other people's cancer go into remission." Preacher: "We prayed and he was granted a miracle."
Yes. It's actually the basic arguement for attacking the theory of creationism. And because of that, i think it's cool.
No it doesnt...Nature does not have a mind, or a brain, or biases or reasons. To say that it does is well... I don't want to say stupid but I mean, it's just nonsensical to suggest something that is not even a living being could reason. I mean, do you know the definition of reason? Nature doesn't pick and choose what it does, it just does. It's not like Nature is thinking "Hmm, should I hit florida or california with a hurricane.." I mean, thats just common sense
This came up on Cracked and it seemed relevent: 10 Things Christians and Atheists Can (And Must) Agree On | Cracked.com Honestly I think that is a pretty good definition of random stuff that happens in normal life. BEHOLD another cracked article: 6 Real Historic Battles Decided by Divine Intervention | Cracked.com
Almost everything in that article can be defined by coincidence, especially number 6 and 5, which can be explained by so much more than "Divine Intervention". 4 is pretty strange, but stranger things happen everyday that are explainable by something other than Divine Intervention. 2 is indeed pretty strange, but 1 is just completely coincidental. However, Im not denying something else is possible, I just really doubt it. Highly.
It's stories like these that are used to raise morale at times of desperation. For all you know bits of it could be total exaggeration. When i live in Leeds, i'm on the 13th floor. It's quite insane because snow and fog can enter in a matter of minutes, and visibility can go from being a couple of miles to about 10 feet. Honestly it gets to the point where all i see out of the window is pure white, in any direction.
How is that even relevant? Do you think nature plans on doing that, or thinks "Hey, it'll be fun to screw with these guys!" Tis a wee bit paranoid if so. If not, I have no idea what you're getting at.
I view these debates as a matter of perspective. Everything we believe in is impacted by our society, culture, environment and whatnot. It takes real courage to step away from your social boundary, your friends group, or even your family's beliefs. This is basically how I view intelligence.. A measure of how large of a perspective a person has. On a side note, if there's one thing I hate, it's bias. I found this to be rather interesting. ..It's just something to be thinking about while or if this debate continues.
You could take that picture either way honestly. Technically speaking miracles have no explanation as the literal definition is "an extraordinary event manifesting divine intervention in human affairs." This divine intervention literally ignores the laws of physics. Such examples (whether you believe them or not) are the Nile River turning into Blood, taking a man's ear that was cut off and restoring it with a simple touch (Jesus in the NT), and so on. Whether or not you believe in miracles that picture, ironically since it is apparently trying to poke fun at them, is pretty accurate.
Its accuracy is what makes it good. It would be absurd for a physicist to attempt to use miracles to explain anything, and yet every religion that I'm aware of claims that many miracles have been performed by its deity. That's the joke, trying to use miracles is a lazy and intellectually dishonest way to explain events, including the creation of the universe.
Interesting. To think that absolute nothingness exploded and turned into everything is anything less than a miracle.
Agreed, I find the cartoon to be pretty funny. However, in the world of science, there is no explanation as to how the Universe was created. Calling it a miracle may be lazy/ intellectually dishonest, yet right now it is the only theory that holds water. Physics CANNOT solve why/how the Universe was created.
No. The answer scientists give is not "absolute nothingness exploded into everything." The answer is "at the beginning of time our universe exploded rapidly, and we don't know why yet." That's the difference between science and religion, "I don't know yet" is a completely honest and acceptable answer in science, but religion can just invoke miracles and stop the investigation there.
