I thought I'd bring this to everyone's attention if you haven't heard of it before. Lost Odyssey is a next-gen jrpg developed by Mistwalker Studios, and I'm really excited about it. If you're a fan of games of this genre, like the FF, Dragon Quest and Chrono series, you may love this. Hironobu Sakaguchi produces, art and design is headed up by Takehiko Inoue of manga fame and Nobuo Uematsu composes the musical score, which sounds absolutely great. You'll hear classical, jazz, rock and Spanish guitar influences to name only a few. The exciting thing about Lost Odyssey is that it seems to draw heavily on the aspects of Final Fantasy that are mainstays of the genre whilst hitting you with stunning visuals, character animations and interaction that recalls Mass Effect - perhaps not for it's complexity but for the experiences 'in the moment' that deliver emotional impact that really stays with you. Negatives appear to be long-ish loading times and occasional frame rate drops. It looks fantastically pretty but whether that was a good trade off or not is up for debate. If you love this style of game or if the storytelling and the film-like experience sounds appealing (It comes on 4 Dual Layer DVD's to store the FMV's!) then I'd urge you to check it out. On the other hand there are going to be people who don't care for it at all, and that's not unexpected. Some videos for you to take a look at. I suppose these could be considered spoilers, so don't blame me. The last one is the only one you might really want to consider skipping over, although it is really good.... OMFG I want this game, but I have RRoD so I have been waiting instead of buying it and just staring at it
Is it turned based though. I don't like turn based RPG's, I usually just end up massing "a" so I can attack. Why would I want to move closer to them, it's my turn, attack!
Its a JRPG... so yes it is turn based. At least thats what i heard. I am dying for this game. I am probably going to pick it up in the next week once I am done whoring achievements out of Burnout Paradise. Its been WAY too long since i played an epic JPRG. The last one was.... Enchanted Arms... and that game was only "okay"... Although that game was fun too... I did every single possible side quest you can do in that game, got every secret golem, and i was so powerful I beat the hidden secret uber boss in like 4 turns, lol.
I have only seen a couple screenshots, I am waiting till i get the game and I am going to completely immerse myself in the experience for hours and hours
Hell yeah dude. Regarding the turn-based system, it's fundamentally the same, with a few additions, namely: The health of your front row party members affects how much damage protection the back row has, mixing things up tactically You can customise rings for your party members which have differing properties - and they are used in battle where targeting circles appear over enemies and you have to time your attacks to have them be more effective
yea i heard it was like the Shadow Hearts system (same company) edit*** i want it so bad i am going to go buy it today damnit lololol
Result! I'm off to pre-order it now and grab a coffee. I'd really like to hear your initial reaction to the game... I will pester you for it later on.
Okay i just started it, I am about 30 minutes into it. Initial impressions: GRAPHICS OMFG INTRO SCENE OMFG BATTLE SYSTEM- so far, not confusing, pretty intuitive and fun to use PRODUCT PACKAGING- i would have rathered they did not cram all 4 discs into the one small xbox game box, they should have done something nifty with it but they didnt. I am already intrigued as hell by the main character. I will keep you posted and spoiler free as I progress through the game tonight, i will probably not stop playing it for the next 12 or so hours. ***EDIT*** I am now about an hour in, the game is still awesome but i thought i would mention there are numerous loading screens. this doesnt bother me, but it might bother someone else. ***EDIT #2*** I am 3.5 hours in, the story has gotten very intriguing. I love the battle system and skill system. Also, I love the fact that it is actually slightly challenging.
Loading screens do not perturb me. It sounds awesome so far, and living up to what I hoped for. I pre-ordered earlier as I said I would (+ exclusive level and weapon, both probably not great but what the hell). Looking forward to this intensely...
I am on disc 2 now, about 14 hours into the game. It continues to be amazing. I wont spoil any more though. I have an almost full party of characters now, and you can use 5 of them in battle. also, the world map is better than it seems in the beginning.
I have to say I'm getting more and more excited. I found some additional music that had been uploaded onto youtube and Nobuo seems to be doing very well indeed. Wish I could embed mp3's onto a page. Hm. 4 days to go!
my only complaint about the game so far is there is a MASSIVE amount of loading... which taking the scope of the game into account is reasonable, but still there has to be some way they could have shortened the loading parts... and also, the game is almost completely linear until disc 4, there is only minor sidequests until you reach disc 4. that part kinda bugged me because i am the tpye that loves to go nuts with sidequests.
