You do understand how a patent works, right?

    no misunderstand my point, (apparently)

Patents are about reverse-engineering and protecting against that, not using some sort of copying technology like what inherently exists in forge. In the wright brothers example, the analogy would blle that someone believes they can show up at their shop, grab the plane, take perfect "scans" of the machine, and precisely reproduce every molecule of the plane. That's what forge does, not reverse engineering, per se. Although, one can still reverse engineer, we (and if I remember correcly, you to) are complaining about the fact that someone can make a perfect copy and claim as they had made it, not necessarily learn something from the other and then do it themselves in a new way.

Did you just make that up? Because that is not how a patent works. That’s also not how reverse engineering works either.

A patent is a legal document that prevents other people from making, using, or selling something that you invented. It does not protect against reverse engineering.

Reverse engineering is when you examine how something is made, and then attempt to reproduce it.

And I don't know what I said to give you the impression that I was complaining about people being able to use prefabs I made. On the contrary, so far in Halo 5, I've made nothing but prefabs. I want people to use them, that’s the point. I don’t call it theft, I call it sharing.

I believe you misunderstood what I was getting at.. I was thinking more along the lines of a small monetary reward if someones map is used in matchmaking. In that case, the use of prefabs would have to be documented//organized a bit better than they are now in order to give a % cut to the creator of the prefab. As it is now, the only reward is pride, which isn't really important.

Personally, I don't ever expect anything to be given to me for forging.. it is the prize in itself. I don't try to make MM quality maps and therefor don't care about having my name on anything. However, the amount of work that goes into completing a polished MM quality map can be near that of what the 343 map designers do on their maps, so I don't think it's that unreasonable to consider the possibility of minor compensation if they decide to put your map in their game. It would probably give the community a huge enthusiasm boost as well, even if 99.9% of forgers will never actually receive any compensation.

I personally don't use prefabsmainly because a piece may look great but they often use way too many pieces to work on one of my maps. Also, I work hard to separate my maps from others with art that is unique to my maps. It bothers me when I see a map and it's obviously a bunch if prefabs thrown down. It would be easier to create pieces that compliment eachother then to search for pre fans that may or may not work together

I have an insane amount of prefabs, but most of them are hidden because I use prefabs mainly to transfer things between different canvases or to port things from one version of a map to another. I view them mostly as a tool for moving objects around. So most of them are my own files and only the ones that I think are cool are visible. I've posted one prefab on this site I think? But mostly I imagine people would be finding them through just searching the content browser in game. I guess what stops me from posting my prefabs on the hub is that it just doesn't seem like as many people care about prefabs.

On the tip of getting recognition, I've never really even expected credit for the prefabs if someone was to use them and I have the perspective that if you choose to make it downloadable, you are opening it up to being used without credit and you should accept and be okay with that as the creator. That is in fact, sort of the core idea...A week or so ago I played a BTB map in Ascend's lobby, walked around a corner and there was one of my years old Priestess harp statue prefabs right there. That was honestly pretty awesome to see and all the reward I'd expect.

That being said, I do let people know if I've used one of their prefabs in a map. Just cause I feel that it's a nice thing to do.

This is a pretty cool idea, I like this. I would participate.
