“Knock down barriers to clear a path for your VIP, but don’t forget the other team is trying the same thing…”

    Creator: Sasquatch210
    Map Used: Foundry
    Recommended Gametype: Onward (VIP)
Recommended Players: 6-12 (all numbers supported)

Welcome to a highly-addicting, ultra-competitive mini-game called Onward on Journey

    The Explanation Explains Everything
(If you ignore the rest of the reading, you should read this if you want to understand the game…)

Many maps have used the idea of knocking down obstacles (barriers, crates, etc.) before. Most were for infection variants. This is a mini-game: a race of sorts. Two teams start in side-by-side symmetrical hallways and must escort their VIP to the destination point at the end. There are plenty of obstacles along the way. But what really makes this game interesting is the inclusion of close-quarters combat. The wall that separates the two teams is ridden with fence walls, small gaps, and windows. These allow for frequent point-blank range battles as the two teams race to the finish.

    Gametype Specifics

    • All players have 200% damage resistance so that you have a chance to take cover if you start taking combined enemy fire.
    • All players inflict 110% damage to speed up the process of breaking barriers, and because that offsets the high damage resistance slightly to perfect the gameplay.
    • The VIP has 2x overshields, but a 50% shield recharge rate, so he (or she) must take cover for significantly longer to recover.
    • The only way to win a round is to escort your VIP to the end, and there are three rounds.
    • Non-VIPs start with an Assault Rifle and an Energy Sword. VIPs start with a Battle Rifle and an Energy Sword. Nobody starts with grenades.
    • The VIP is the only player to get a motion tracker, and he only gets 10m of range.
    • The VIP gets unlimited ammunition but has weapon pickup disabled.

    Aesthetics

Not much to say here. There aren’t many aesthetic aspects to the map except for the overall cleanliness of the interlocking. Blame Foundry’s frustratingly low budget. I don’t like budget-glitching, and I don’t like sacrificing gameplay for looks. I know you understand.

    Simple Strategy (If you care)
    1) The weapons at the end are more powerful than those at the beginning, so it is always best to do the most killing at the end.
    2) When knocking down Barrier, Larges and Barrier, Smalls ALWAYS weaken the bottom first, THEN the top. That’s just the best way.
    3) Never get rid of your energy sword; get rid of your assault rifle.
    4) When two crates are stacked, ALWAYS knock down the top one, NEVER the bottom.

Gameplay Video: A Day in the Life of Blue Team’s VIP
(There were 9 people in the game, and I don’t boot people just for even teams, so Red Team was outnumbered but they performed admirably)
(Still, this isn't the best possible representation of this game and map because of the lopsided teams, but oh well)

A few more pictures to help give you a feel of the map if you so desire
(For some reason blue team INSISTED on becoming pink… Don’t ask why, I don’t know)

    One quick thing…
    • This game and map is most fun (by far) when the two opposing teams are really close in skill level; even more so than usual. This is because when the teams are not directly next to or almost next to each other they can only knock down barriers, instead of both that and fighting each other.

And Finally, a VERY Special Thanks to…

Bungie: For making Halo drivable Forklifts
    Microsoft: For making Xbox
    The Future: For existing (hopefully)
    My Dog: For being furry
    My Testers: For testing
MS Paint: The creator of great and terrible things
Double Box: For always being there (until I used all 24 of you)
    Foundry: Most annoying warehouse ever
Prophet of Truth: For being really bad at activating Halo Rings

    Have fun on Journey!

Dude this is the best competitive obstacle course I have ever seen. Totally unique and original, totally looks good for an obstacle course map, and the gameplay seems uber fun and very balanced. I am DLing this right now and forcing my friends to play it whether they like it or not! Dude this is feature worthy. No joke I give it a 7/5. I will give an unofficial review after I play it.

How have I never heard of you? I'm sorry, but this is by far the absolute greates Obstacle/Brawling map I've ever seen. Hell, it's the only Obstacle/Brawling map I've ever seen. The amount of ingenuity and creativity needed to think of this is amazing. Couple that with the patiance and pure skill needed to actually Forge it, and you have yourself an amazing forger who can make amazing maps. I've seen shitloads of half-assed attempts at what you've done, but none of them have come close to where you've gotten. Sir, as a forger and a human being, I congratulate you.

Not much else I have to say about this map, but I'll get back to you, probably...

Anyways, take my praise as more than it really is. I don't say this just to pamper you and make you feel better, I say it so that you know how great your talant is. I'm guessing you already know how great you are, but a little appreciation goes a long way, at least according to a few other members who've told me it gives them a noticeable increase in confidence.

    Cheers,
    HarisSales.

Oh cool, I remember testing this with you about a month ago. I was blue team VIP, and we won. As I remember, this was super fun to play, and is more fast paced than the traditional "run from Fat Kid while hacking down barriers" map. So congratulations, hope to see more maps like this is in future!

Thanks everyone for the encouragement and honest feedback! It's great to see appreciation for the work I put into this map! The details really were a bit complicated to work out (weapons, number of obstacles, etc), but it appears as though it was all worth it! If we are given the right movable objects, I am certainly considering remakes and/or re-imaginations of this in Reach.

Just the idea of one of my first map posts being nominated for a feature is fantastic. Whether or not it is, I'm just glad that you like it; and it's you who decides whether it's nomination-worthy or not.

Once again, thank you so much everyone for all the positive feedback and encouragement! I hope to see you once more before Reach! :)

Unofficial Review of this map (not a review hub review)

    Enjoyment:

When I saw this map I first thought, "Great, another stupid Journey map where you knock down obstacles while running from a fat kid game." Alas, I was wrong. This map was so much fun to play on. Such re playability in a map like this is just phenomenal. Not only do you need to run an obstacle course yo also have to dodge the other team who is trying to not only do the same thing but trying to stop YOUR team from doing it. I found myself out ARing the opposing team members while barking orders through my mic and killing the other teams VIP. Even though some weapons were unorthodox in the fighting, every part of the map was made to bend to the unique fighting style.

    10/10

Balance: This map is symmetrical, so balance was key. Spawns of course were not much of a problem, being that the map was what it was. THe weapons are very balanced and all have an interesting effect on gameplay. For example, SMGs were mostly ineffective without dual wielding, Beam rifle was balanced just enough to ensure even a trained no scoper needed to stay on his toes. The Laser was my personal favorite, though it could take out multiple men with one shot, LOS (lines of sight) Caused you to train your focus mostly on objectives or obstacles. Plus with the three second charging time, you could easily be taken out no sweat. Gameplay is fair for both sides as long as teams are even, but even if it's a 4v5 the team with 4 can stand a chance.

    10/10

Durability: This map cannot be broken. There is no way either team can jump through to the other side to kill the other team. My only complaint is the beginning spawns cuz sometimes my more immature friends loved to just stay and shoot and usually the VIP was the only one to make it out of the somewhat spawn killing massacre. This was not much of a problem as most of us were to busy pounding at the obstacles. I merely recommend a three second invulnerability to fix it. Plus the time limit is often a clincher. Seven minutes was not enough to usually get the job done what with all the fighting and obstacle bashing. Maybe 10 or 15 minutes would be good, it just kind of broke gameplay and made it less interesting because most everyone was usually breaking through barriers to try and get to the goal and a three second swordfight ensued at the end. other than that, no complaints.

    8/10

Aesthetics: This map obviously had gameplay put before aesthetics, which is a good thing since it's usually the opposite. The map's merging is clean for the most part and while no bumps were found on my forgethrough. (except for that first corner) the map itself looks good even if no aesthetics were intended besides merging. This map was a forge masterpiece.

    10/10

Originality: Obstacle maps have been done before, but this is a whole new and competitive take on it. the fact that two teams are trying to reach a destination before the other team while not only breaking obstacles faster, but killing the other team so they could not do it. THis idea has never been done before and frankly and personally, I am glad you are the one to introduce it. This sparks a new map generation that is sure to appear in Halo Reach. The originality in itself is feature worthy.

    10/10

    Overall Review:
    9.6/10

Dude, remake this in Reach, please. This map is original and cool and will stay in a worthy spot on my closing hard-drive, forever to be remembered as one of the few greats in H3 before I move on to Reach. Thank you for sharing you first and most likely your last map with us. Best of luck to you in Reach! ;D

I just downloaded this, it will be a keeper i can tell. nice job on the map, I've always thought a clean map looks better than an aesthetically pleasing one.
