Hello, This is my first post here because I've only recently gotten into Reach and Forge. I had a 360 a couple years ago which died and was never replaced. My son got a 360 recently w/ Reach and we've been having loads of fun being creative with Forge. I do not have a Gold membership of Live just yet, so I cannot actually share the map I'm making, but I did want to ask if perhaps I've come across something innovative and hope it could be used by others if you deem it worthy First off, if this is not a new technique, I don't need some smart remark telling me how much of a noob I am. Only respectful responses will receive any attention. Thank you Now, for the Door Opening Method I've found.. I wanted to create an opening door, and I perused the write up that is in the Tips and Tricks thread. However, implementing that technique was very tricky. Using an unstable crate just didn't seem reliable enough for me. I was thinking... hmmm if the weapon vendor (which I've been able to create after reading about it) can use a portable shield to break and allow an object to drop down after hitting a switch, then coudl a portable shield be used to prevent you from entering a two-way shielded room? That is, the blue/blue shield also called a weapon shield. I tried the first thought... fail. You can push yourself just slightly through the shield and hit the portable shield with your fist and break it. I wanted you to have to hit a switch first. I was going to use fusion coils and Plasma Cores to trigger the room to open, so I had some placed in the room already. I also was moving them around in the air, so I had them set to "Fixed" physics. I moved one of the fusion cores right up against the two way shield and then realized that because it was using FIXED physics and it was close enough, it would prevent me from bashing my way through it and prematurly blowing up the cores. Sweet. No matter which weapon I use I cannot penetrate the shield. Awesome. Works flawlessly and seems like a much more clean and elegant design compared to using movable objects and mancannons. To do this exactly as I did: 1x2 doorway opening in a wall small weapon shield (blue/blue) placed in doorway teleporter frame placed inside door jamb two fusion cores placed right up against the shield on the inside. Set Physics of Cores to "FIXED" so they cannot be knocked over by the player. with a 1x2 doorway, using two cores on the ground (but set to fixed) was enough to block the player from jumping over them etc. Placement and number of cores will vary depending on size of the doorway you'd like to block. As stated, you'll see that no amount of frags, plasmas, bashing, shooting (even with sniper) can penetrate the shield. It can only be triggered to explode using your method of choice, such as a switch system. I used a plasma core as a target for a sniper to shoot from a distance as the method of opening a door that leads him to a much nicer sniper nest. That way, you have to work for it and take a shot while vulnerable to fire. If I get my Live subscription I'll share up the map. This is why there are no pictures at this time. But I think I've described it thoroughly enough

thanks, but that's the article I was refering to as having read. I found that technique clunky... sorry if that offends anyone. So is my technique new? that's all I'm really interested in knowing. whether I stumbled upon something different. I don't need any kudos, just curious.
I've seen it done before to make a collapsing bridge mechanic, but people tend to not want to waste bullets to open a door. What I was trying to show was that the basic principle is already there. What I would suggest is that you use a tripmine As a trigger volume instead, as it requires no shots. You can use a delay spawn to nest it between the two fusion coils, and place it so that only the red button can be seen clearly. When you run into the tripmine, it will detonate with out killing you, and open the "door". In the bottom line, is this a new mechanic? In this specific set up, yes, but it has been done in different ways before, and what you have could use some tweaking. maybe you can read the rest of the thread I posted and come up with something else. New gadgets are always appreciated!
thanks. for my purposes, this was exactly what I wanted, however. that is, to make a sniper sit in an exposed area of the map and hit a small target in order to get the pay-off of getting to the best sniper nest in the map. I know I could have triggered it other ways, but this is what I needed for my application. I can see how it might be used as a bridge system... interesting! If I get a Live subscription, or get the camera out and just snap some shots, I'll post up the pic... it looks really nice.
