As the title infers, this thread is a battle between the DMR and The Needle Rifle. Which is better? Personally I am in favor of the Needle Rifle due to its rapid fire rate and supercombine, but the DMR is more accurate. Feel free to discuss maturely, but please do not spam. Post a comment on a pro or con of a gun and I might add it to this list. Needle Rifle Pros Fast fire rate Supercombine Scope Reloads fast Cons Less acurate Runs out of ammo faster DMR Pros Accurate Reloads fast Scope (better than NR) Used in many gametypes Cons Semi-Automatic No special use
Needle rifle only dies half the damage per shot compared to the DMR in my experience. Dmr is better and DMR has longer range qnd better scope
though the needle rifle has a higher rate of fire and is more forgiving when you miss, it makes it a good weapon for new players the . DMR has higher damage and is better if your a good shot so in my opinion its your skill lvl whichs determines which gun you like. i like the DMR because of its high damage and accuracy
need rifle is better beacuse it can supercombine esplosion and reload faster. and it makes you fear the pink mist with its spoonful of baltime
I vote needle rifle because I can load up an enemy, once is his shields drop, then hide for a few seconds. After that, I go back and fill him with the last 1-2 needles and watch his body go 'boom', then roll around in the remains. Cuz, you know I wanna absorb his warrior spirit n' ****. ._.' Anyway, because of this... it requires less precision than the DMR to get your kill. Makes me happy.
I like the needle rifle better. It's scope doesn't seem as far but the bloom doesn't seem to go out as fast making for easier head shots once you take down their shields.
I like DMR for big team battle because on the larger maps the needle rifle's scope is too short. Needle rifle is nice for taking out unshielded enemies, and works well if everyone is using it. Dmr, however, seems to be a better solo weapon because it is more accurate. I prefer the pistol in many cases over either of these guns, however.
It's similar to the Carbine vs BR threads in Halo 3, except reversed. Though the Needle Rifle kills slightly slower than the DMR (I BELIEVE), it is significantly easier to use as the bloom is more forgiving when scoped. On the other hand the DMR kills faster but is harder to use properly. So it's all down to personal preference and how good you are with the gun, really. I prefer the DMR on smaller maps and the Needle Rifle on larger ones.
DEEMER ftw! i like the feel of it, plus i think the NR obstructs my vision of the screen. its too big
I haven't studied it but in my experience needle rifle takes generally seems to take one more shot to take down shields and 3 shots to unshielded body to explode. In CQB I find needle be handy when things get hectic and to hard to aim for head shots you can just hold trigger and get fair results.
i tend to kill an enemy by headshot moreso than a supercombine. so usually it's just one shot when the shields are down.
needle rifle for sure, the bloom closes much faster, the inner reticle circle is tighter, so it is easier to shoot say across pinnacle with more accuracy, it supercombines, it has the option of full-auto if need be at CLOSE RANGE (please dont hold the trigger all the time), You barely have to slow your shot to keep the reticle perfect, its just a better weapon
I really don't see why the supercombine is seen as a plus, at least in usability terms. It's actually a disadvantage, since it doesn't reduce health and instead just takes 3 needles once one shot to kill you don't put lasting damage on a player if you're body shotting them after their shields pop like you would with a DMR. Yes the combine has a small radial explosive effect, but it's so incredibly small that it's never really a factor. I've seen maybe 1 or 2 people die from a proximity supercombine explosion in my 3000+ games of Reach so far. Imo it's still the DMR. Plain fact is that the kill time is quicker, and whilst the bloom kicks in later with the NR, the effects of bloom are much more forgiving with the DMR when spamming to a fully bloomed reticle. I tried the NR extensively in MLG, and whilst it's great used in tandem with a team using DMRs as a clean up weapon since headshots are easier to nail first time, the DMR just outmatches it overall. Even the big NR exponents over at MLG accept this, which is why they're calling for 110% damage settings to make it a viable choice for a starting weapon in v3.
NR Con: cannot take out vehicles nearly as effectively as a DMR. I like the needle rifle because it has many more bullets in a single mag, yet only one bullet headshots are needed to get a kill on an unshielded enemy. When combined with plasma pistols, snipers, etc... the needle rifle works best for finishing things off. It also has a lesser bloom rate (because more bullets are needed to kill a full shielded enemy) so it is best when killing helpless 1 shots.
Agreed, as a cleanup weapon it leaves the DMR in the dust. When I'm having a bad game and kills keep getting away from me I feel as if the DMR should just be renamed the assist-machine.
The point about vehicles is a good one. Mass DMRs can punish light vehicles pretty quickly. NR seems to do virtually no damage to vehicles.
