Recently (just tonight) my iPod decided to kill itself.

The only screen is just a blank white one. However when I plug it into my computer iTunes recognizes it perfectly and sees no problem. The "Do Not Disconnect" screen doesn't show on the iPod though.

I literally looked at my ipod after it had been playing in my pocket without me knowing (no headphones plugged in) and saw the song and regular screen, put it to sleep, locked it,and set it down. I came back about an hour later, picked it up, unlocked it, and white screen.

Its a 5th gerneration iPod (the 30GB iPod Video, before the phone, touch, or classic came out and the Nano had yet to replace the Mini) so its pretty old but I've used it without problems for awhile...

One issue that might add to the diagnosis is that in the past month or so, the center button has been stuck down where it doesn't click when I press it, yet it recognizes the press (solitaire is a ***** to play). So I don't know if this is a side effect of maybe the iPod thinking I have yet to let go of the button after a few hours...

Now heres where it gets tricky. After toying with it, I got a menu to appear. It was the main menu, but when you scrolled up or down not only did the select bar move but the entire screen shifted... But that gets freakier. A couple years ago I used iPod Wizard to put a new theme on the iPod. All I did was replace a few bitmaps with my own (title bar, volume bar, solitaire cards, and rating stars are camo, and other minor things are green). But at one point (jsut as long ago, probably 2006, 2007 or 2008) I expiremented with a green select bar (quite a complicated bit of software for a simple thing). But after I realized I would have to restore my iPod then put all the data back on it to get new green strings, I just decided to stay with the blue for ease. But when the menu was all messed up earlier tonight, the select bar was green...

There is the option of backing up all of the data on my iPod and restoring it, but the problem is not all of the music and videos are from this computer and it would just be a ***** to find what I would have to reimport to iTunes, put all of it back on, remake my playlists, redo all of my settings, etc...

Any idea on what I should do?

I have one as well. I think the battery is just going dead on mine. Charges don't last very long and I'm often sitting there pressing the button and getting a white screen with no options. I haven't added anything to mine in about 3+ years and rarely even use it much since I'm always at home. Damn thing just sits connected to my USB cable.

You can actually see the files on the iPod and copy them over to your computer directly... but the files are all random 4 letter names. I had to play the file and check the properties to find out which mp3 it was.

You can always take it to an apple store. I don't know too much about iPod video modification and if it voids your warranty or not, but if you take it to an apple store they might be a be able to fix it w/o you having to reset all your stuff.

The modification does void the warranty, but seeing as I got the iPod christmas of eigth grade (December 2006) it was as good as gone anyway.

The battery has been perfectly fine, I can watch two full movies (with the lowest brightness) in one charge...

And if you have the windows explorer folder for the iPod open, if you view by details and have artist and title as some of the columns, you can find each individual song... The four letter names have something to do with the organization of the software.
