It's not, it is just a virus.

Don't do it. Trust me, when it gets jailbroken, there will be an article about on the devBlog.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. I was gonna download AVG to check it out, and then be doing this from a virtual windows machine.

Edit: Interesting. It looks like the main file he showed is Cydia for the iPod Touch 1G.

Nemi, do you have the 2G iTouch? I'm guessing so...

Download the pwnagetool from the torrent networks and it works the with the 2G the same way it did with the first one.

You tested that out? I'd rather not get another virus one.

Besides, technically it shouldn't work. The 1G and 2G don't even have the same processors. The bootloaders are waaay different, and there are plenty different sig checks.

Why even jailbreak it? Is it really worth breaking the warranty and possibly getting owned by viruses just to jailbreak it? I mean, the app store now makes up for what jailbreaking used to do, and I'm perfectly happy with my 6 pages of apps.

Tell me how breaking the software warranty on my iPod Touch will cause me to get viruses that may or may not exist yet, and I'll take scare that seriously.

But really, there are literally tons of tools that are made for the iPod Touch that would be helpful to me that aren't available due to the strict App Store regulations. I'd like a packet sniffer, or a better SSH client, or a VNC server, or a Bluetooth app, or a NES emulator, or running apps in the background, or torrenting, or VLC Media player, or copy and paste; hell, I'd love to theme this thing too.

I know how to use SSH. I'm fairly comfortable

A bluetooth app would be very nice. From what I've heard, the Nike transmitter inside the 2nd gen ipod touch is basically a bluetooth transmitter. Is that correct?

I'd love to get some emulators on my ipod as well, I love me some old school nintendo games.

Yeah. Apparently, the only thing that's keeping the Bluetooth from accessing anything else is a simple file that says to filter to only that; simple to edit.

I too have been thinking non-stop about this for a couple days now, and I'm still very much confused.

You'll find all sorts of videos on youtube of people claiming to be jailbreaking their 2G ipods, and you'll find just as many videos telling you the others are fake.

Watch what this guy here has to say: He sounds legit.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OBiHyhPc0J0&feature=related

The site I go to has also said that there isn't a jailbreak for the 2G yet, but then, on their last update, they said not to update to 2.2.1 because you would lose your jailbreak. WTF. Can a 1G iPod have 2.2.1 software?!

And why does the QuickPwn website already have a jailbreak for 2.2?!?
So I'm guessing by now that the 1st generation ipod can have 2.2 software.

And QuickPwn is part of the devteam, right?
Then why on the devteams site does it say they still don't exactly have it?

I went there on their website for the first time yesterday, and there was a video about some redsnow? Apparently is helps jailbreak the 2g?

I'm still very much confused about it. Halp?

    None of that is legit.

A jailbreak is possible but it has not been released.

The iphone dev-team (blog.iphone-dev.org) has found an exploit, as has a different dev team. However, there are currently 2 problems with the jailbreak.

    1) It is tethered, which means that if the ipod is turned off or restarted, it will turn back on unjailbroken or it just won't turn on. An exploit at a lower level is needed to solve this

    2) I think there are some legal problems with the current jailbreak, and the dev team cannot redistribute the software that is needed to jailbreak without apple giving them hell.

It could take awhile for the problems to be solved, or it could be released tonight. No one knows really besides obviously the devs.

Check the dev teams blog (above) for updates.

If you do want to jailbreak DO NOT UPDATE TO FIRMWARE 2.1.1

edit: E93, redsn0w is the code name for the iPT2G jailbreak

edit: I read on Digg that an bluetooth has been made available on the PSP I believe, and that this might be able to be ported to the iPhone/touch. That means that you could share music, movies, apps, contacts, photos, everything! Can't wait.

    Replying to above quote:
If there is no packet sniffer, then I'll make one for it. But there's pretty much no way in hell Apple would allow one in the App Store.
SSH Client is a tech thingy. It's okay.
You're confusing it with a VNC client. A client gets to look at other servers. If there's a VNC server on an iPod Touch, then I can use a client to look at my iPod Touch. And there is one out; it's called Veency.
I still want a torrenting app.
VLC Media Player is available for iPod Touches, jailbroken.
And Copy and Paste is supposed to be universal.

I really want to know why they haven't added a copy paste function yet... Seriously... That should have been available day one. They'll probably add it when the update the iPhone during the summer.

    Ah I see nemi.

I think apple is waiting to see how the palm pre does before releasing copy and paste to smite them.

Or apple might take them downm in the court rooms

What's 'jailbreaking'? I heard you can unlock it to make it an iPhone, but this is new to me. I wouldn't do it, sounds dodgy.

    Err. not really.

Actually, you can make calls on iPT2G if you buy a microphone, many come with earbuds. That's without jailbreaking.

With jailbreaking, so many things are possible, most of which have been listed in my above post.

You can't do anything wrong by jailbreaking, unless you decide to go to the apple store with your receipt, name, address, and all your info and then show them your jailbroken iPod.

If you restore the iPod, Apple cannot trace any jailbroken ipods. Jailbreaks cannot break (or brick) your ipod. The only way an ipod can break from a jailbreak is if you drop it in water or from a large building, and then it happens to be jailbroken.

My friend jailbroke his iPod touch months ago. Yeah, he has the 2G one.
I haven't really had a good enough look at it to search through all the features and the only thing I really know (but are probably not jailbrak features) are:

    - It is able to make calls within a wireless network range (Wireless in the network computers use
    - He has emulated some games onto it
