Re: HOW TO: Hi-Def pics (noob-proof intructions) I can't really help you unless you show the screenshots...
Re: HOW TO: Hi-Def pics (noob-proof intructions) Someone had asked me in my map thread what I used to host my pictures with, I can explain here if it helps anybody. Basically, I take widescreen screenshots at 1080p, download them from Bungie.net, then upload them to Photobucket.com. When you're uploading pics, there's a checkbox you can click to set your file limit to 1 mb instead of setting it to a certain resolution, this way you can upload the whole 1920 x 1080 image without it automatically resizing and shrinking. Now, once I have the images uploaded, I do my resizing with image tags, set to 640 x 360 to fit on these forums. But, I also add /url tags so that when you click on the picture, it opens up the full size 1920 x 1080 picture. I think they look good enough shrunk, and those who choose to click can see everything in true high def detail. Here's how I type my tags... [ url=http://...][ img width=640 height=360]http://...[ /img][ /url] (without the spaces) That makes pictures like this, that you can click on to enlarge... [img width=640 height=360]http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o282/edlogg/16718701-Full.jpg[/img]
Re: HOW TO: Hi-Def pics (noob-proof intructions) I don't have too much info to back this up with, but I was under the impression that halo's screencap system (or more specifically, the XBOX itself) renders the image at full-size, REGARDLESS of the TV it was taken on. The game is sent out at the same resolution and the TV will take care of the visual size, and thus it allows for the game to be played without time-costly tweaking in settings. Sure, Standard size and HD will be sent out at two different sizes THEN fit by the TV, but that's why when you take a sceencap it appears to be re-rendering the entire image, only in smaller regions known by 3d rendering programs such as 3ds Max as "Buckets", which are most common in the Mental Ray renderer.
Re: HOW TO: Hi-Def pics (noob-proof intructions) Now THAT is freakin' helpful! Very professional-looking too. I am going to use your method when I post my first map onto these forums, giving it that professional feel.
Re: HOW TO: Hi-Def pics (noob-proof intructions) If you have to resize images, I highly recommend not using IrfanView - there is a major drop in quality, though not quite as bad as Paint. There's a better alternative if you have WinXP. Go here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx Download and install the image resizer; it allows you to batch-resize images to whatever dimensions you choose, without a major loss in quality. The original images are kept in case you still need them. If you don't have WinXP, use Photobucket to resize the images - the quality is pretty decent, and you don't have to install anything.
Re: HOW TO: Hi-Def pics (noob-proof intructions) My wife is a photographer and she takes some breathtaking screens in Halo 3. Once piece of advice she gave me which works well is this: When you are taking a picture of a person or action happening, try moving further away and then zoom in ( in real life it works better with different aspects of zoom). You will notice it draws the background in more and creates more focus on the player. In almost all cases it makes the action look more kinetic and exciting and for some reason, in Halo 3, it draws in a considerable higher amount of detail on the character models when you are zoomed in (even when you appear to be the same distance away from the subject). I tried it on my next screen of me swording someone I had a pic lined up of the ownage taking place and I moved back and then zoomed in to frame myself up pretty much the same way and I noticed I could now see the bumps and scratches in the armor and more enhanced lighting details. Also, with the background drawn out the action looked way more compelling. It's a simple trick that works great. My Wife only wishes the Halo 3 screenshots had adjustable apertures and focus. Women, always wanting more.
Re: HOW TO: Hi-Def pics (noob-proof intructions) Not sure if anyone has said this, but you don't need another program to save the image without loss of quality. You just need to save as .PNG in Paint! It won't take much space either, but still gives just as good quality as a .BMP!
Re: HOW TO: Hi-Def pics (noob-proof intructions) [quote author=Mordi link=topic=269.msg28586#msg28586 date=1200945903] It won't take much space either [/quote] It actually is bigger by about 200 or 300 kb, which isn't much, but when you have a lot of photos it could kill anyone with a bad connection.
Re: HOW TO: Hi-Def pics (noob-proof intructions) Ok, I think I understand your way, but I do it slightly different. We start similar though. - Login to Bungie.net - Go to your Screenshots - Click on the thumbnail of the image you want (this opens a new window) - Now, I'm on Mac so it's one step easier... click on that bigger picture and it downloads automatically. - It is now saved on my computer then I just upload to Flickr. - Bam. Full res and it looks great! I mean, I had to do no resizing and my image res is 1920 x 1080. I have a 32 inch HD TV so if you have an SD TV your res will be different. http://www.flickr.com/photos/scrappapervlog/sets/72157602211245358/
Re: HOW TO: Hi-Def pics (noob-proof intructions) The number of useful and informative threads like this one has grown to the point where it is impractical to have so many stickied threads. This has been added to the Useful Threads Sticky, so it is being UNstickied.
