Well I'm making an urban themed big team battle map. It's about 1/3 to 1/2 the size of hemmorhage. I'm wondering what power weapons there should be. There is a warthog on the map. So anyone that has experience with power weapon placement, could you give me some advice? I'm thinking of: 2x sniper 2x shotgun 2x grenade launcher How does that sound? Also, I'm thinking about having a neutral Rocket Launcher or Plasma launcher but I'm afraid they might be overpowering.
It would help if we were given a picture to base any ideas off of. Map geometry plays a huge part in what weapons to use.
I will once I finish the map. It's a BTB map, so it takes a while to build. But basically its a rectangular map with a river in the middle. Then each team has 2 bases (One small and one large). It's a reversed symmetrical map. So the only place to have a power weapon like a rocket launcher/splazer/fuel rod/plasma launcher would be directly in the center.
Some things to consider is how powerfull a certain weapon is in the context of your map: Long straight lines of sight make sniper the most dominant weapon and having one each spawning in a nice safe spot on the base (hemorhage) can make life pretty crappy for everyone else. How different would the gameplay be if there was just one sniper that spawned in the centre? Heavy vehicle presense makes spartan laser the main power weapon (paradiso). Lots of small corridors and building interiors make sword/shotgun/hammer into the main power weapons (sword base, countdown). The main thing to consider is that power weapons should never make the game too frustrating for the other players and the only real way to guage this is to play test. If the guy with the sniper is getting 20 kill streaks too often, it may be time to reduce the clips, increase the spawn time or maybe... gulp... remove it altogether. Some people will ***** if there is no sniper, but many good maps in halo 3 did not use them at all, including standoff which was my fave BTB map.
sorta off topic but why no snipers in standoff it seems odd you could also have weaker weapons such as the focus rifle or plasma launcher but if it is huge and open there is no point in shotguns except objective (only time i use shotties in hemmorhage)
I guess standoff had no snipers cos there was a direct line of sight from base to base and snipers would have been way over powered. As it was crossing the map was tough as hell with just one or two guys BRing you. Ah....the good old days when bungie used to thoroughly playtest maps....
Team Snipers on standoff was ridiculous. Everyone would be way out around the edges of the map, peeking their heads over hills. Good times. Anyways, my advice is to try altering ammo count before completely tossing a weapon idea out. You could even consider giving each side their own rocket launcher but with only 2 shots for balance. Dual nade launchers is fine. Most people can't use em' right anyways. Dual snipers is fine. Since you're saying it's not a huge BTB level (I'm thinking Boardwalk size right now) I would limit them to 1 spare clip. Dual shotties should be fine. If you're going to have lots of buildings, again lower the ammo count.
