This will only take 6 minutes of your time to complete. It is anonymous. Link to the Survey About a year ago, I made a survey on the /r/halo subreddit to determine the interests and concerns of the Halo community. Now, a year later, I have improved upon the survey; that is, fixed troubling questions that were criticised last time, removed those that were superfluous, and added some to answer questions that I felt were left unanswered. Upon further reflection, I realised it would be better to gather data from more sources than just the subreddit; as a result, I am posting the same survey here, so that all viewpoints are covered. Hopefully, through the gathering of data, I will be able to make some sort of comparison between the first survey and the last, and see whether attitudes of the Halo community have changed over the last year's events. Please answer truthfully, and again, to cover all bases, share it with any Halo fans that you know. Thank you for taking the time to complete this!
I like the idea of the survey. Information gathering is important. A few things I'd like to bring up. For some of these questions, "I don't care" would be a better option than "I don't know". I KNOW how I feel about it. I don't care. i.e Do you want Duel Wielding to return? Me: I don't care. Survey: Oh! So, you don't know? Also, I dunno if it was your intent, but there is a pretty obvious anti-343 sentiment rooted in many of these questions. I dunno if that was your actual intent, but I think anyone can pull that mood out of this thing. Be careful about wording, it'll sway things away from an unbiased base. This isn't the first time people have tried a "catch-all" survey like this but from what I've seen time and time again, it just panders to the angry outspoken who want to use quantified data as backing for their Twitter rants. I hope this survey can actually reach a true general audience so I wish you good luck.
I'm going to list some of my feedback as well while going through this: TLDR: Overall, survey was fine and tackled some good topics about Halo that could prove to be useful but suffered from some minor issues including wording of questions, unclear response choices, and several biases that may affect/skew the data. Spoiler: Intro Questions - Right off the bat, your age groups are not clear and not easily readable by a viewer. For example, if someone was aged 23, they might pick the 23-28 age option rather than the 18-23 option or vice versa depending on how they are which can affect however you use that data. A simple fix would just be to make the age ranges inclusive and not overlapping. - The question of "When did you start playing Halo" might also skew some results and may affect how you view their responses. For example, in my case I started playing Halo with Reach but I was still able to go back and play the older games as well so I could still have a valid opinion on them even though my first Halo game was Reach. - I feel like you could make the "Why did you start playing Halo?" a multiple answer question as many people might have more than one reason as to why the picked up the game Spoiler: Gameplay - Okay this issue kind of encompasses a lot of the questions in the survey but a lot of the time, you have the options of "Maybe" or "I don't know". Both offer similar opinions that really can't be differentiated easily. If you replaced one, or at least included another option of "I don't care", that could add a whole new perspective on whatever question you're asking Spoiler: Brutally Sincere - If I'm being brutally honest, this entire section has a very underlying tone of hatred towards 343 and others. It has been established countless times that 343 has messed up and may have not brought Halo down a good path so most of these questions are not very useful at all for helping Halo become a better game and are more just simply seeing how people's opinion of Halo as a whole are (and if that was your intention with this section, then that's fine). And the questions that could be proven useful are not done in the best way possible. - The first question establishes this tone of 343=bad right away. A better question could have been something like, "Have you at any point lost interest in the Halo series?" with a yes or no response with a follow up question of, "Why did you or have you lost interest in the Halo series?" with a variety of answers that could include 343's involvement as one of them making it less biased against 343. - The question regarding who 343 should look to about issues is kind of confusing and not very clear. I myself am confused about it because how the way it's worded, you make it seem like you're asking who 343 should ask first about the issues of Halo's community as a whole. I don't know if that was your actual intention but I don't see how the issues with the community should be resolved by a specific portion of that same community...? Unless your intent with this question was to ask who 343 should go to first regarding issues with the game itself, then rewording the question would benefit. - The final question is...well, I think anyone and everyone who knows about what happened regarding opinions stated by pro players will know why this question is included, and frankly it is kind of unfair to target a specific part of the Halo community. This question could be made for any part of the community so I don't know why this is even needed other than to gather data to invalidate a certain portion of the community...
Excellent survey. The depth of the questioning was pretty good, and helped organize my thoughts in an informative way. I hope they see the results and take the time to discuss them with their art and sound teams.
I only put this section in because I've heard people speak about these very issues and mention these very points. I wanted to see if these opinions are held by more than a few, and nothing more. On your other point, yes, I meant issues with the game itself. I would edit the question, but doing so removes all previous responses to it.
Lot of really poorly worded/dumb questions in this. Do you prefer slower floaty gameplay or quick gameplay. Like what the **** ahaha Koth wasn't a default option under gametypes to return? Best radar implementation?? (CE & ODST both didn't even use radar).
I phrased the questions like that because people have made those specific points (word for word) before. Nevertheless, what do you think can be done to improve it? Also, I can't edit questions without nulling any previous responses (although I thought CE did have radar.)
It had radar in campaign, not multiplayer (which is where the controversy is). There were a lot of other questions where the phrasing or even general logic behind the question made no sense. Should Halos mechanics be tailored towards competitive or causal? That in particular completely misses the point and offers a no win solution. The correct answer being, both. Which wasn't a choice. Both should always be the answer to that question. There were a few others like this. I appreciate the poll and the width it covered I just think some questions could've been worded better.
Ah, I see. I was actually taking from my experience of playing Halo 1 on the PC, which does have radar in multiplayer by default (I didn't know that the Xbox didn't.) I wasn't exclusively talking about multiplayer, as well - I was covering the campaign's use of radar too (it's the implementation of radar overall that I'm addressing) I also looked through the questions again, and I couldn't find a question that asked if gameplay should be tailored towards competitive or casual. The closest question was this, which had a scale from 1-5:
Responses are now closed! I'll post the results here in a few days, but this may take a little longer than last time due to a much larger increase in responses.
Here are the results, as promised: https://www.reddit.com/r/halo/comments/7wdezg/halo_mega_survey_2_results_are_in/ Thank you all for responding and for the help in getting this out there!
Can everyone here who voted for Reach as having better multiplayer maps than Halo CE please quote this post. Spoiler I need to know which usernames to enter...
