Interesting analysis of what makes Halo Combat Evolved the best shooter ever.

Nice. Though I would've preferred more acknowledgement of what Halo 2 refined from its predecessor. Boss battles, more characters, playable Elites, more story, more vehicles, friendslist, etc.

Maybe he just really hates those snipers. lol

I absolutely love CE. I didn't even know what I was buying at that time. I stepped out of the cryo chamber and thought, 'oh so this is a first person shooter!'.

The mystery, the atmosphere, the story, the vehicles, the covenant, the difficulty, the ring, the architecture, the AI, the music, the overal design, the heroic character you play, the creepy flood, only 2 guns with you and so on...

Still one of my favourite games of all time.

Halo CE almost made me never pickh up an FPS again. Not only do I personally think that it is not the best ever but probably one of the worst games in existence. You can't even say that it was good for its time because this is when unreal a quake were thriving and were a million times more solid. And sure I played it thousands of hours because that's what my friends played but I can hardly find a redeeming factor past some of the ideas that went on to make the franchise that it is and the exploits that were fun. Mechanics were insanely clunky and crap, most levels were beyond terrible even in a casual sense. Makes me sick everytime I see someone try to recreate Bloodgultch due to Nostalgia and their 1v1 chicken games as a kid. Fans like that are a big reason why halo isn't what it could be today... Then the campaign........ Don't even get me started on that pile of steaming crap. Sorry to anyone involved in making it but I don't think it's fun to walk/drive across a wasteland to kill a few enemies and then push a button over and over again.

Tear me apart but that's my experience and opinion.

Campaign and story is dumb for all of them... sorry. Boring, repetitive, childish, cheesy and simply not appealing to me. Multiplayer... Halo 2 was my favorite. Obvious reasons why halo 2 fun, solid, longlasting and just great. Halo 3 was the most solid over all. Halo reach was a disgrace at release but shaped up to be decent by the end. Halo 4 was alright but had terrible maps. H2a was ooookay, I guess. Better than reach and 4 but pretty much a joke. Halo 5 is solid in many ways but lacks longevity, is too casual and has some glaring flaws regardless.

I am assuming here you mean that the game play is solid, regardless of how much it isn't Halo.

Indeed. Some things fit really well, like thruster, alt fire (light rifle) but then other things have no place, like sprint, clamber and ads. The maps are all decent, some are really good in my opinion. Remixes are very lazy but 1 or 2 actually play fairly well. Forge is pretty good even though it also has some major problems. When this game is played with classic settings, it honestly feels great.

Heard about the video and this thread and gave it a look. Have to say the video pretty much covers it if you ignore the personal opinions.

Still... there's this line early on: "Your brain punishes you when you fail..."

Sometimes I am simply amazed at the way people wield the word "punish" when they talk about Halo. They weave it together with "fail" and create something that defies description. I mean, does your brain hop out of your head and beat you with a stick when you fail? Cause that's what it sounded like when he said it. I'm having some trouble figuring out how your brain can punish you. Seriously.

Anyways, the game's impact on console gaming tied with a real well-written science-fiction story made it a no-brainer for Hall of Fame recognition. Only thing is I wonder what would have happened if Bungie had stayed with Apple? Would we have even heard of Halo if it was on the Mac?
