Is anyone using the Halo 5 Forge mode on PC? If so, how are you finding it? I've had a dabble in it a couple of times and I have to say, I absolutely hate it. The menu system, the movements, the way you manipulate objects... The basics of Forge has been completely lost with this version of Forge, I feel. Like assembling a basic floor, I have no idea of what scale the "floor" is listed as, but it isn't even a floor, it's just some weirdly scaled box (8x16x24?), with too much detail on it's upper surface. I wanted to be able to get in and just make a map, nice and simple... but the movement, the placement, the objects, none of it is what I thought the latest Forge would be. I'm seeing some good maps being made, but as a whole, it's so backwards in its progression. Am I the only one that thinks this? Is it far easier to Forge on the Xbox One?
I too think it's easier to forge on Xbox one. Unless I am scripting a whole lot. I tend to get distracted as I play in 4k. Something just doesn't feel right. I dunno. Feels wrong.
It's the learning curve of the controls, that's the main issue. When you get used to it, though, you'll probably agree it is far superior compared to previous versions of Forge. It also sounds like you are new to forge in "5", is that so? Everything is there and floor-like items can be found under floors, Primative Simple, and Primative Detailed. You may also find walls work for some floors. Primative dtailed is best if you want a large 128x128 smooth surface, that only has some detail around the edges. Good luck.
If you're used to console controls, use a controller. If you have a compatible cable you can simply plug in the controller. Doesn't even require batteries in the controller.
It's more the whole love I had for Forge previously is that it was a simple object editor, that allowed for free-flowing movement and placement of objects. The newly created Forge is no longer that... and while it is superior in what you can produce with the end results (and honestly, you could have done the same if the items were available in the older versions of Forge), the overall feel of Forge for me is lost. Why Forge for a mostly dead game, when you could use the same knowledge in a map creator where you load your own textures and literally build your own map? It's no longer a simple editor, and it's not a map creator, it's just stuck in between... which for me, is a bad place for it to be, since you can't do everything a map creator can do, and you have to put a lot of time into learning a complex editor purely to make the same kind of maps you could have made in the older versions of said editor (had the newer features been added). I can't be the only person that thinks this? It's way too over-complicated... at least on PC anyway. WASD for basic movement, R to ascend, F to descend (...ok), Q changes object movement/rotation, and E does nothing? If you want to simply rotate yourself on the spot, you have to right-click and drag your mouse... In any other kind of observer mode in games, it's simply Q to rotate left, E to rotate right, and you move to where the cursor looks. Why have they made it so complicated in that your Forge monitor doesn't even move in the same ways anymore. Movement is more complicated, placing objects is more complicated, rotating objects is more complicated... but it's all supposed to be quicker? I can't see how it's quicker than pressing X, A, A, like in the older versions. Opened the menu, picked up a block, placed a block... done. In this, you expand the menu, expand the category, expand another category, select lengths, the block is already "placed" but then you have to wiggle it about with movements in locked axis........... is it really that necessary to have all that? Did we not spend literally hours and days making Forge creations in the original Forge mode? Were they not playable maps and decent, and was it not only the requirement to create new styles of maps needed by us, from Bungie (and now 343), to give us simple, plain surfaces, that we could colourise ourselves? or add decorative pieces like foliage... In my honest opinion, Halo 5 did not need the over-complicated Forge mode that forces people to re-learn how to move in a Halo game. It simply needed the additional items... but even then, these items that are added are STILL textured, and non-plain. They still can't be configured with unique textures... and I might be wrong, but you still can't generate water out of a fountain?
just keep forging, you'll see that you are wrong about the movement and stuff... it works MUCH better the way it is. Trust me. You'll see it soon if you stick with it. I was of your opinion back in December, for a couple days...
But I can't even make a floor... that's the point. I try to place items next to each other, they stack, fall through, line up vertically, or just don't line up at all. I've found the Forge so impossibly difficult and frustrating that I don't see the point in trying to learn it because I still can't do the things what I've always wanted Forge to allow me to do - create a unique map to play Halo on. Oh and on an unrelated note, the Halo 5 Forge (PC) has no way to exit the application. There's no exit button, or quit, or leave or whatever... literally have to task manager it every time :|
Yeah, just Alt+F4 when you want to exit. It's safe. When you place an item, you just go to the relative location, and place the piece by clicking on it in the list. Then, you just use the arrows on the axes of the piece to place it exactly where you want it. Use the snapping function to the interval that is most appropriate for the situation. Unfortunately, you do need to rotate your camera a little to see for sure if you've placed the piece exactly where you intended. I use keyboard & mouse for all of this, btw.
