After downloading the new Survival maps on left 4 dead, I've wanted to see some Survival map remakes on Halo 3. And so I offer forgehub a challenge. We would like to see an entirely new genre of infection maps. The gametype will be based off of the Survival game in L4D. And here is the first challenge of this gametype: To recreate the Lighthouse map. It doesn't get any plainer than that, so if you accept my challenge, thank you many times and good luck. If not... well at least you read through this. (Also, be free to make other Survival map remakes as well, or even your own original to add to this gametype. The ideas suggested are just the main task I am offering.) Update May 17, 2009 Alright, I'm sure more people are going to try to recreate Lighthouse even though we already have one done and some still working on it, but it seems about right that we need a new challenge in order to maintain both organization, promises, and update this. The second L4D remake challenge is to: Recreate No Mercy: The Hospital Also, thanks to DarkestofAngels idea, I'm going to create a list of the known L4D remakes or originals thus far. Beach House - Eternal Reconnaissance (Lighthouse remake) No Mercy Rooftop - Cheddarboy (No Mercy Rooftop remake) No Mercy Finale - MetaWaffleDee1 (No Mercy Finale Crescendo event) L4D Courtyard V2 - CheeseJam (L4D original) Known works in progress: The Hospital - DarkestofAngels (The Hospital, elevator hallway remake) Deadly Drains - Eternal Reconnaissance (Death Toll, The Drains remake) Survival Original - Plasmaterial (L4D original) Elevator Panic - Cheddarboy (The Hospital, elevator hallway remake) Past and Present Challenges: Remake Lighthouse (Past) Remake The Hospital, or elevator hallway as it is known (Present) One last note: Thank you to all who have made this thread famous and helped bring Left 4 Dead into Halo 3. These last few weeks have brought us quite a few people to work on these L4D maps and it has been my pleasure working with all of you. Also, we now need an OFFICIAL L4D Gametype variant to go along with every one of these maps to make it easier to play them, save memory on harddrives, create map packs, and especially if we try to make this a new official gametype. Please discuss what we can do to balance both remaking the experience, but keeping if fun and fair on Halo 3.
Statement: I have already made a map like this and posted a thread about it here on forge discussion. Talk to me for any question marks =)
I like your idea, and if you can create a cabin-based map on sandbox or foundry then that would work really well as a first survival map. Note: To all out there who have read this thread, I have an idea for the gametype. Feel free to comment or add suggestions for it. For tanks you could place a gravity hammer inside a room that ensures that when picking up the hammer you also pick up an overshield, which fits the patience meter from left 4 dead because it goes down over time. Hunters have swords to pick up and custom powerups to change speed to 200 and gravity to 75. Default zombies will have 150 speed and 90 gravity to represent how quickly they attack and how they can climb buildings. As for smokers, it will be impossible to remake so they must be removed unless anyone has an idea to recreate them. Boomers as well since players cant explode in halo 3. For alarms, only honor rules will make them work and this new Halo 3 Survival gametype is supposed to be played with anyone, without honor rules. And a suggestion for the fusion coils and spawns that still allow players to prepare, fusion coils and propane tanks will be placed around the map so that they can be rolled to desired spots for strategy. And to allow humans to have this time, we could block off the zombie spawn room/rooms and in order for them to escape teleporters will spawn 30 or 45 seconds through the game, therefore forcing them to wait to respawn and giving the humans time to prepare. Similar to Master Debayter and Rivalmass's Judgement map, teleporters will be placed randomly across map to give the zombies different places to appear in the map, reducting spawn killing. Any more ideas or accepting the challenge would be greatly accepted. Thank you to all who have taken interest in this idea, I support you the whole way. Send a link to this thread when you have finished the map or want to show progress. I will test it or check the pics out when I have time (although I still need the mythic maps, but I may soon get these so no worries) Thanks again, please take this suggestion into consideration.
Maybe you could post a summary of what the survival mode in L4D is? I don't have the game...played the demo, so I know the zombies and such, but as the survival mode is new DLC its a completely foreign experience for me. Anyways, for the zombie classes, you'll probably have to make them into what they were intended to be, rather than what they are. The smoker is a support class. He's intended to pick off stragglers. Give him a sniping weapon, but a lowered damage modifier. For the Boomer, give him low damage resistance and modifier, and turn on his grenade regeneration. If I remember correctly, sticks can be instant kill. The Boomer is, however, the weakest transition, so you may consider taking him out entirely.
Oh, sorry I should have done that first... I'll get to that now. Left 4 Dead Survival mode- In Suvival mode you and 3 other survivors play on a small portion of Left 4 Dead campaigns. In most you are given only 1 or 2 buildings to survive in and an outdoor environment as well. There is a spot on the map where the humans spawn that provides 3 weapons, a sniper rifle, an automatic shotgun, and an assault rifle (which acts slightly more like a halo 3 SMG because of clip size). The humans can pick grenades as well, molotovs and pipe bombs. There are also med packs and pain pills to pick up as well. Scattered around the map are Gas cans and other explosives that can be moved to desired spots around the map to destroy portions of the zombie horde or light them on fire, blocking off certain areas for them to pass. The humans can do anything they want on the map, but nothing really happens until they start the game, which is done by activating power, elevators, opening electric doors, etc. This allows zombies to spawn and the game begins. There are three goals. 4 minutes- Bronze medal, 7 minutes- Silver medal, and 15 minutes- Gold medal. Of course, it is possible to survive past the desired 15 minutes although no more rewards are given other than a higher leaderboard rank. But getting these medals are challenging, as hordes of hundreds of zombies climb rooftops and cliffs to reach the survivors, special infected appear every once in a while and bring hell to the fight, and tanks appearing, causing panic as a Giant Superpowered zombie attacks you and pounds you halfway across the map. And that is survival mode. Special and Regular Infected- -Hunters, basically speedy and stealthy assassins that can jump on top of buildings or at the survivors and rip them to shreds with his bare hands. A very useful assault zombie. -Smokers, support zombies, have superlong tongues to drag survivors closer or hang them over cliffs and slowly suffocate them. Basically long range support. -Boomers, large undead "methane bombs." shoot them and they explode with a gooey liquid that blinds the humans. Otherwise they try to vomit and do the same thing. This liquid attracts hordes of zombies and cause mayhem for those vomited on. They are slow and are really just for scouting and suicide missions. -Tanks, super giants with muscles the size of a survivor on its own. They are about the same speed as survivors and lose health if they don't attack survivors because of their patient meter, that forces them to be quick and brutal. They can pick up rocks and throw them at survivors or attack even worse by a punch that throws them across the map. Survivors panic at just the footsteps of these monsters. -Common Infected (the horde), regular zombies, super fast and can climb walls or buildings. They are mindless zombies and rush, never really caring if they'll die instantly. They don't inflict much damage unless they are in groups, which makes a teamwork rush essential. That is basically survival mode right there. Sorry I didn't do this before, but it's here now, so if you've got ideas for a map or remake of a Survival map, good luck now!
I haven't played Left 4 Dead so I was wondering if it is a map that you walk around anywhere you want and try to camp out, or is it like where there is a certain spot to go and then you get to another certain spot somewhere else, also are there weapons everywhere around the map?
Well, you can't go anywhere necessarily. There are boundaries to the place but you do have a map that you're allowed to hide pretty much anywhere (or at least what they've given you). Of course, if you hide in some places, certain zombies have different advantages over you. No, weapons aren't found everywhere, just in one spot for Suvival mode. And the three weapons are, as I've said before, a scoped hunting rifle, a pistol (dual wielded), a shotgun, and an assault rifle. Then there are two grenades, the molotov, and the pipe bomb. Camping works, but eventually you have to move when the horde overruns you.
Well, simply put, that is Survival mode. There are more mechanics to it, like finding a spot to hold or finding higher ground as is the case with the new Lighthouse map. But yes, Survival is, basicall, a Panic Event, although the goal is not to panic but survive.
Alright, so the main problem with remaking this is the horde. There will never be a bumrush of zombies in halo, because there aren't that many players, and the zombies are controlled by humans, who are usually smarter than to just rush in. You're probably going to want to just have the Special Infected.
The levels take place in 4 different areas: The city like around skycrapers, for example a hospital map, in farm areas with corn fields and barns, and railroad tracks, in just regular suburban areas, like churches, streets, gas stations, and fishing lakes, and an airport. There is also the free add-on lighthouse map that is really, a lighthouse in a woody area. For the horde, I was thinking just regular zombies would be the horde, and a few zombies would be allowed to pick up weapons, get a custom powerup and stop them from getting any more weapons. Then if they died they would have to wait to pick up weapons again. That way special infected would be fairly regulated, not overflooding the survivors and making this impossible.
I am not sure if in left 4 dead the zombies have shotguns but that could be a fairly good gun to use, being that you still have to get close to kill them, but the custom power up would have to spawn ever 90 seconds probably. The custom power up cud lower the damage modifier so it is not instant kill with the shotgun.
Or you could just let all zombies be able to pick up weapons, but change the respawn times on the powerups and weapons. And I have no idea why you would give the zombies SHOTGUNS. Usually zombies are given either plasma pistols or swords. In this case, give them plasma pistols. Turn down their damage modifier, so it'll take a bunch of zombies puching to kill someone. But turn off the human's shield recharge too. You could have regenerators as medpacks for healing.
That actually isn't a bad idea, turning off shield recharge. I actually forgot the shields because I haven't played many games that use them, but that way the health is measured and if you have low health then the screen goes red. And regenerators would recharge them just like a med pack. Only one problem with this though, if the zombies have plasma pistols, then they can overcharge them and take the shields down immediately, ruining the purpose of a horde attack, or teamwork to kill a survivor. I'll take this into consideration, but in the end we may need to use energy swords or magnums (hopefully not magnums though). If you come up with a solution to this, please tell me.
Good point. Energy swords will probably work better in this situation then. As for the actual maps, are you looking to recreate one of the levels in L4D, or just a map that effectively uses the gametype?
The only reason why I said shotgun was because plasma pistols do not sound like what left 4 dead is all about, left 4 dead sounds like it isn't in the future where there are teleporters in stuff, magnums don't sound to bad tho.
The point of plasma pistols isn't that the zombies are literally using plasma pistols. Plasma pistols are used in infection as alternates to energy swords, because its nearly impossible to kill somebody by shooting them with the plasma pistol. It forces the zombies to melee, and instead of the sword lunge, you have to get up close. So when I suggest plasma pistols, its so that there will be a huge crowd of punching zombies, not so that there will be people shooting plasma pistols.
Yah, maybe plasma pistols will have to be the weapons. Otherwise the infected are too powerful and all zombies will pretty much be hunters, which isn't fair. If they take down the shields right away, it isn't too bad because we'll turn damage down. That way it is still fair for both teams.
Alright, then the gametype is pretty much figured out. That leaves the actual maps. Are you thinking exact recreations or something based around the limitations of the gametype?
