Edit: Went with Cyber Acoustics 3602.

So I am sick of relying on my dinky HP speakers to suffice. They may be Beats, but their size renders that useless.

I want to buy a set of speaker for my dorm that can hook up to my laptop via headphone jack without setting up a complete sound system. A plug and play.

    Optimal price range under $50.

A 2.1 set would be best.

So far I've only browsed Amazon, and found the
    Logitech Z313, meh ok
Logitech Z323 (the worst reviews I've read)
" Z523, a bit pricy but Cnet likes them
    " Z220, meh ok
Altech Lansing VS2621, looks like my favorite

All I want is a 2.1 set with a reasonable price that are good for a college dorm.

Look up Altec Lansing and look at some of there sound systems. They have a good range of speakers for any need.

Get a jawbone speaker. You will love the Bluetooth.
