Hey all, I just wanted to see how different people get over a forgers creative block when trying to come up with new maps. Everyone's different so it will be interesting to see the spread of solutions to a common issue we all experience.
I hardly get forgers block but the times that I do, I usually just try to think of a gameplay concept that I want to achieve. I usually don't pick too many abstract design goals though a good example of how to get your brain kickstarted is to look at the Halo custom design contest criteria and pick 2 to stick with. I usually set my own. Like, build a 2v2 map with 2 separate rocket launchers as the power weapons and a use shield doors while maintaining a relatively balanced and fun experience. This is an example of one I've done in the past and it turned out to be one of my favorite maps to play that I had made.
I play some dark souls nowadays, after getting my ass handed to me by the game for a few days I can come back with a fresh mind. That or I just read some books.
Just make that bad map that is giving you it. It is like sleeping with women if you have this weird thing with an ugly chick and it is blocking you from being with dat ass you really want just **** her and things will be alright.
I just start building with no goal in mind. Just play with primitive blocks and see what happens usually nothing too impressive but somewhere along the way I get an idea and that seems to jump start the process
I usually try to articulate what it is I'm trying to create, then I go look at dev maps or community maps that either did that thing really well or really poorly. If I can't get any inspiration, I'll try something completely different. Reading a book or a walk usually helps.
Think of something you really do not want, and use it as punishment, for motivational purposes. Like, anal sex. Though anal sex has been gaining in popularity over the years, most people would still rather not experience it. If the fear of receiving anal sex doesn't get you motivated, I am truly sorry. If you grow to love being punished, just remember "peaches." It may just save your life.
I just take a break from Halo. Learning to take it slow is the best thing that has ever happened to my forging.
Location. Location. Location. You have your awesome space station. Since you have good aesthetic talent that matches grounded game play, decide what locale you want to represent next with the object palette at your disposal. A good theme or locale can provide me with immense motivation to complete a map.
If I run into a block, a quick google search for concept art always helps a little. Millions of pictures. Pick one you like and try to recreate it. Due to my uncanny way of forging, building a piece that interest me first always helps the rest of the ideas follow suit. But bro, what about your maps that you were working on >>
Usually the best medicine for forgers block is to just chill and play the game. Sometimes waiting for inspiration to come and just enjoying the game is more than enough. Forgers block is also a great time to test maps, and help others out with there maps. Right now I have the exact opposite problem of forgers block lol, I have like 4 projects I am working on and another one I have in mind.
Well, if your not into using creative substances than come talk to me. I have way way way to many desgin ideas I'll never be able to do. Wouldn't mind throwing some of them in your direction
