I have this saying that makes sense to me and some other people. It is "Put useful items in useless places." It means that if you have a problem placing a powerful weapon, put it where it is quite useless. Like placing a Shotgun in the middle of nowhere, or a Sniper in short tunnels. Even a vehicle inside a building. It helps make the weapon easier to defend and use. What do you think about it?

You want the weapon in a location that people can get to a better spot quickly for that type of weapon.

Mapper blogs? That's what you want. Oh boy oh boy tomorrow, hah I'll have some.
Universal rules to all things FPS, and even some bits about life. ::)

something off the top of my head
"A building is alive, like a man. Its integrity is to follow its own truth, its one single theme, and to serve its own single purpose. A man doesn't borrow pieces of his body. A building doesn't borrow hunks of its soul. Its maker gives it the soul, and every wall, window and stairway to express it." - (Roark) Ayn Rand, The Fountainhead

That is the funniest response I've read on these forums I think, omg ROFL ........

I don't quite think that Quote implies that, but his quote does have a point, especially to forging.

If you can't place something well, then you shouldn't be placing it, because it apparently doesn't belong on your map.

I agree with the OP, the placement of the Shotgun on Narrows for example, it's in an extremely vulnerable spot to being sniped, and the placement of the Sniper Rifle is also in a place where it won't be used at (except to snipe the other sniper, staying there is asking for a flanking). The Rocket Launcher is placed in the direct center with exploding boxes on either side, I can't tell you how many times I've tossed a grenade at the box and killed the guy grabbing the Rocket Launcher. Valhalla has the Snipers placed in the based, a cramped area that you can't just camp with it while it respawns. The Laser is in the center of the map, vulnerable to long range fire and dying to the vehicle you are aiming to kill before you get there. The Energy Sword on Construct requires you to run out on a long platform that gives you no chance at escape or using the weapon if you are attacked at range, even placed in line with the also vulnerable Sniper Rifle, placed in the center where you will be under constant fire from covered places if you try to use it there. The Flamethrower is placed between the two lifts, making you have to run a long distance or make yourself an easy target to those at the top in order to use it.

Now think about Snowbound, I play Team Doubles a fair amount and I'll tell you one thing, Snowbound is the easiest map to win or lose. The Shotgun is placed right next to the exploding boxes, but those aren't a problem since you can shoot them before you get there. Once you get the Shotgun, you rule the center pit and never have to leave, using the shield walls in your favor. The Beam Rifle and the Spartan Laser are in each base, the laser being used very rarely and the beam being used in conjunction with shield walls to get easy headshots.

The placement on Guardian is how is should be.

The sniper is picked up looking down a long hallway where it's useful, but not something that can dominate, but gives an easy shot towards the Hammer. The sniper "perch" is just up the ramp.

The mauler and flare are in a semi-circular open room, where the AR can easily dominate, but a narrow tunnel and the grav-lift room are nearby, and it can dominate there.

The shotgun is in a long green hallway, like on Lockout. The tunnel is long, so the range makes it almost worthless when you pick it up. People can also drop down from above.

The hammer is in a glass case. In one direction is a long hall with the sniper at the end, and on the other is the Shotgun spawn, and a grav lift where Active Camo is.

So just take note: The weapon should be near a place where it can dominate, but not in it. Placing a shotgun where the laser is on Valhalla or Standoff would be stupid. Also, equipment that helps it should be possible to get to, but not be as easy. The Bubble Shield on Valhalla is directly across from the Shotgun. The regenerator on the same map is in the middle by the downed pelican, but the sniper is at each base. So place the shotgun in an open room with a narrow hallway connected to it. Put the BR in a hallway with a balcony nearby.

Turrets are the exception, missile pods belong in a spot that requires them to be hauled out. In the Beta, the Missile Pod was where the bomb drop off in Valhalla is. The missile pod on Sandtrap, in the downed Albatross, is another good example. Machine Gun turrets should have a wide are to shoot, for maximum effectiveness, but still be open, encouraging(but not forcing) the turret to be ripped off the stand. That way, people can't have infinite ammo forever.

Exactly. And the more powerful the weapon, the more vulnerable you need to make it. There needs to be a risk/reward trade off. "Do I go down that hallway for the shotgun, or is there someone waiting above to throw grenades down on me?"

the sword on tombstone is a great example, you have to risk sniper fire and br fire just to wind up falling short of the prize.

when you put items in bad places people get frustrated with the map. frustration is not a people pleaser.

One of the best examples for this is the sniper on Lockout. Yes, it is useful, but it cannot control the map by itself, due to the twists and turns. Secondly, it's got explosives behind it which can be used for either killing someone or blowing it off. BALANCE!

on tombstone a good player can grab the sword, but a great player can grab the sword and sniper. That what I was trying to get a cross.
