After finding some little references and easter eggs in Deus Ex, I decided to make a thread for people to post any that they have found. Im hoping this will be different enough from the other Deus Ex thread already in here to not get locked, which is why its solely for easter eggs and references, and the discussion they entail. I haven't noticed any talk of either in that thread, which is what also inspired me to create this thread. So onto the references. The ones I found that made me laugh were; A rather diplomatically written email from an Australian person called John Howard to the head of Picus Media, voicing his concerns about the way they are portraying the civil war in Australia. For those of you who don't know, John Howard was our Prime Minister from 1996-2007, was a right-royal brown-noser to Dubbya, hence, a huge advocate for the war in Iraq, and was a general dickhead. It could also be referencing, though I doubt it, an Australian actor named John Howard. But the former makes more sense in this regard. Also, civil war in Australia?? We're way too lazy to give two shits about war, especially internal war. Why would we fight each other? That made me laugh, too. Also, there was a reference to, I believe, videogame censorship on an eBook somewhere, as well. Was saying something about videogames not producing psychopaths, but pushing those over the edge that were already close to falling anyway. A rather smart, if underhanded stab at the critics out there. They are the ones that have stood out for me so far, but there are apparently tonnes more in there filling the game up. RoboCop, Final Fantasy 26, the original Deus Ex games, even the movie Hackers gets a reference in there somewhere. If you find any particular easter eggs or references that jump out at you, please share them here. You can include the place where you found them if you want, post images or links, or you can make us work for them if that pleases you. Regardless of what you choose to do, get posting, I wanna see them.
yea i found the Robocop one, its in the police station near the beginning of the game. there's a cop named Alex Murphy in one of the offices, and he and another cop are talking about the Robocop movie, and the guy named Alex Murphy has never heard of it. another cool reference i noticed was that there is a character named Barrett, who has a gun-arm. pretty blatant nod to FF7... also, there are other similarities toward FF7 as well but not as blatant.
There are posters of Final Fantasy characters with the words FINAL FANTASY on the posters in the guard's chambers in... Spoiler the mission where you have to sneak onto the boat in Hengsha. I don't remember if it's the guard quarters before you get on the boat or after. I believe it was after.
I'd say the FF references are mainly because Square Enix are involved in this game, and they're having a dig at themselves. Good to see they have a sense of humour. I will Spoiler this one so I don't ruin it for people. Spoiler In Van Bruggens penthouse, if you bothered looking you'll notice that there isn't any toilet paper next to his toilet. Instead, there are three seashells, which is clearly a reference to the movie Demolition Man. That made me think for a second, but after I realised what it was it made me laugh. I loved that movie back in the day, and it makes me want to watch it again. Does that make me sad? :\
