I have an idea in mind but I cant quite figure out how to do it exactly and thought maybe you guys could give me some tips and help, problem is I am a solo forger and dont like people taking maps from others and claiming it their own. So any help?
Coming from a guy who has a pet peeve with powerful camping locations, make 'holdout' locations that limit zombie angles of attack, but have more than one entrance so that all the survivors don't just stare at the door and get easy kills. I make Holdouts that have three entrances or so, so that the survivors have a couple of walls at their back, but aren't super powerful and will eventually need to retreat to avoid being overwhelmed. Also limit semi automatic precision weapons on the map to two or three since they are brutally powerful against zombies. Yes, the magnum does count as one.
I think infection is a difficult game to make really fun because of the scoring. I think players should be rewarded for survival. However, if survival is the only scoring option, then players have no incentive to work hard as a zombie and will only be frustrated when they spend forever as the zombie. If the zombie is the one getting points, then he has a great incentive to score kills. However, a player would then prefer to become infected, and therefore not try to survive. Achieving points per kill incentivizes clashes, but not survival. This makes the game pretty much a game of Slayer with shifting teams. In the days of Halo 2, survival was the way to "score," and it was always played on Foundation, where zombies could easily get kills, and therefore not have to work hard. The only incentive for zombies to move forward was that it was "fun." The key, I think, is that the map should favor the zombies rather than the defenders. I cannot think of a more frustrating game than one where you are a vulnerable zombie, and everyone is just scoring point after point on you, while you just pray that someone will miss a bunch of shots in a row and let you through. I might model these types of games after any 3v1 minigame from Mario Party, where one player is super powerful and the others try and avoid him. Or, similarly, the movies Alien or Predator. I think the notion of favoring the zombies over the defenders really stands to be stood on its head. I would not mind seeing a map no bigger than 128x128 that forces the survivors to deal with the zombies in their own environment. Perhaps the whole battle could take place inside of a giant Halo 1's The Library-type elevator, or some kind of stress-inducing room. But this is a bit more extreme example! One example of an infection gametype I've made that more resembles Mario Party is where I made a massive floating wall with a walkway alongside of it. The players would fall off the map if they left the walkway. The infected player spawns some distance away on an island, and has a rocket launcher with infinite ammo. He shoots rockets at the survivors. His chances of hitting are high with many targets. As more survivors become infected, the number of targets decreases and makes the chance of an infected scoring a kill much less. However, with more infected, there are more rockets being fired, equalizing the difference.
