I suggest looking at framerate as "anti-art". If someone arts their map up to use all objects possible, and it performs bad, then the art may score high, but that sacrifices playability and overall how well it wsa forged. It can be argued that the best forger theoretically would make a beautiful map thta also does not have performance problems. Problem being somewhat subjective, but generally, anything noticable while moving/looking around that distracts from the game or the map's beauty. I don't think the art aspect of this should just be about detail, and whoever inserts the most of it into their map. It should be about how that art works with the theme and geometry. We are, afterall, not painting a canvas, but designing for a video game, where performance stats are king.
As multi pointed out, the high object density nature of 1v1 maps is going to make it difficult to completely avoid frame rate drops. I would only take points away if it is serious enough to impact gameplay. Also, I don't know where this "best forger" guy you're talking about is but literally all of the best maps in the game have performance drops of some kind. It's not a matter of a "forge skill ceiling", but a matter of Halo 5's broken engine that seems to get worse with every update.
Hopefully I'm not asking a question that's already been asked - I have a map that's pretty much finished but not quite done yet - do you have to start making the map after the start date or can I enter my map? I have already uploaded it to forge hub but it's more in a play testing phase than actually having been totally completed. Keep in mind I'm a n00b compared to you guys, so anything I start afresh on will likely be poo at least for a little while. The map I want to enter (Wayward Alpines) is my best map yet but I've been refining it for a while and it's still not quite done.
It looks like most people don't really care for another judge. Haha. I need a reason to actually play or get on again, so if anyone wants my opinion and or help, I'm free EST-5 10:30pm until about 12:30am. Should be that way for the next couple of weeks.
There shouldn't be a tie breaker. Judging shouldn't be some yes or no, veto or pass process in the final rounds. We should be sitting down and explaining our views on our choices, honestly it would be pretty unanimous within the top 10.
I completely agree. However, the argument about the engine is that when one increases the performance of the machine (PC) it does not improve it a lot. Some, but not much. the very next word I used wsa "theoretically".
Yes, and considering that the best forgers aren't capable of avoiding performance drops means that your theory is incorrect.
its 100% possible to make a good looking map that plays well and doesnt have frame drops. As long as the builder makes comprimises in the most effective areas then you dont need to sacrafice detail for performance. It takes time and effort, sure, that is what skilled forgers do. Is this contest not about skill? Lazyness shouldnt be excused for this type of thing.
I value design skill and art skill more than some irrelevant forge skill. Especially considering the game used to perform better, AND I could just test these maps on the One X and they wouldn't have any issues at all. Again, some drops are fine. A lot aren't.
Oh hey look! A stupid post by LargerFiend! Didn't see that coming. It has nothing to do with laziness, but in fact the opposite. Any map that pushes the boundaries of forge in any category will likely see performance drops. Again, where are these "skilled forgers" you're referring to? The top forgers (as far as I'm concerned) all have performance drops on their maps in some form. It's just a part of forge since the engine has gotten progressively worse with each update. As long as it doesn't effect gameplay, I won't consider performance drops when judging. If you don't like that, go judge your own contest.
Alright, op has been updated to reflect the correct judges. Next contest I'll be sure to keep everyone (including you @Buddy Jumps) in the queue who didn't get to judge this one!
No, in theory those same people, including yourself, could, if you prioritized performance equally or higher than art, accomplish this. It just so happens that you do not. I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm saying you could do it.
Except we don't prioritize performance until it impacts gameplay, which is exactly the same way I'm going to judge.
valid, but consider that what impacts one person's gameplay may not necessarily impact another's. Some people can detect framedrops easier than others, due to the way their brain works. Personally, I can only stand a small drop before I'm very distracted by it, but maybe that's just me?
LOL i forgot about the one x why the **** do i care about framedrops when they wont exist in 4 months lmao
lol why do you get so offended by anything I post? man you are so sensative. Ill prove it to you by submitting a map to the contest that looks amazing plays amazing and has no performance issues. Then by your definition I will be the most skilled forger that has ever existed. Oh ya I forgot about the One x... I do agree, but if this contest is happening soon though we should still have to have all the judges agree on what is an acceptable amount of frame drops for the normal xbox one. I dont want to assume they all have the exact same standards. I dont think their has been a single forgehub contest for halo 5 that didnt have contingencies. The more transparent we are the better. --- Double Post Merged, Aug 18, 2017 --- Well their is a change because I think it might be fixed at 4k lol I just want better textures, increase render distance and have 2k as an option. I dont have a 4k anything so that feature is useless to me.
