A popular one is the Knight. And there are several heal spells as you go that get stronger. there's a weak first one you can get from the handmaiden in firelink or you could start off at the herald and have a spell.

What's the viability of bows/ranged spells?

I havent really used ranged spells. I tried out Lightning Spears and was a little disappointed in damage. I like to use the bow to bait out enemys so i dont have a 5v1 going o n,

I went with warrior because he has high dext, decent strength and doesn't look super clunky. I suck at that game though :) what's your steam name?
