      3. Lastly, you can try drawing the map floor by floor. Start with the bottom, showing the main fighting areas/rooms, and connect them. From there move upward. The problem with this is that it works best when each tier completely circles the map. Angst, for example, does not circle the entire map with the bottom tier, so it would be more difficult to sketch Angst with this method. But it would be helpful on a map like Worthy.

So you take your shape (for this I'll say square), and you visualize the possibilities (bottom floor or death pit or both, stairs or lifts or both, how many tiers?, any overlap?, how many routes into the room?, what weapon/powerup spawns in this room?, pillars?, etc.). Once you can go through all of the possibilities through a natural process, it becomes much harder to get forger's block.

Inspiration never hurts. Look at Rocket Room on Damnation/Penance. It is very unique because the bottom floor feels like a secluded rectangular room, but the higher you go the more open the area becomes. What is the main purpose of the room? Rocket spawn. How many routes into/out of the room? Keep asking yourself these questions. I personally feel the best way to improve is to study other successful designs and find out what makes them successful.

Sorry to say, there is no static method I use when drawing maps. It all depends on the style and how complex the layout is.

      1. Sometimes I start out with a simple sketch showing the main routes and the locations of the rooms. If I find that the design works out, I add a little bit of complexity to it.

      2. But if you had no idea in your head simply draw a shape that you want your first room/area to be. From here you need to be able to visualize all of the possibilities. This is important because once somebody has an idea of how they want the room to look/play, they have a hard time redesigning it. This is a bad habit because chances are that there will be weak points of the map that need to be addressed.
