Who got it locked/who did it? Normally mods post when they lock a thread, but not this time, was just wondering if you saw anyone lurking around the time. I want to tell them 'I told you so' even though I never told them so.

Definitely. Even if I disagree with the guy pretty damn strongly and think he could have worded his OP better, I don't wana see the flames descend. I thought this issue was dead tbh, surprised to see it come up again.

When I say 'wrath' I mean numerous people coming in and preaching logic, often with a forceful argumentative style (no more so than he displayed in his OP). You know how it goes, when an OP ends with something like 'this is my opinion and I don't care if people hate on it', they're quite aware what they're saying is going to invite strong disagreement. This doesn't mean they should refrain from holding, or even voicing, an opinion, but it lends a certain 'I know this is going to start an argument, bring it' attitude, which all to often goes the way of flaming.

Ie. Sensible in terms of view on forging, rather than in terms of action when faced with someone who's angling for an argument.

I did, then thought better of it. I'm gonna keep and eye on it because it's ripe for a flaming, but I decided it isn't that guy's fault that his opinion is going to invite the wrath of the sensible.
