Actually, I don't think so. Jews/Israelis are typically very vegetarian eaters. As with what I believe the whole Bible is about, I think it's just the way that you should act to a living thing that has (though not our level, but still) emotions and feelings (kinda). I don't think there's ever really been a point where they NEEDED meat for survival. It's considered a delicacy (I can get tons of sources here, but same, I'm supposed to be studying for a test :P), actually considered a kind of holy act in a way. I don't really think it has anything to do with survival, it's all about the way that people should act.

Just was looking in the PETA thread and haven't bothered to go through everything, but I thought you'd find this interesting (I'm not about to personally attacked in that failforum for religion on something completely different). It's the progress for making kosher meat, which I've seen a couple times in person. I can explain any jargon or whatever, as it's clearly aimed towards Jews that know it already.
