Ye, I'd heard about Ida, but didn't really know that much. Nice find, stumble can be utter win at times. And with this Safari beta locking up all the time I might just switch to FF for a while and take advantage of it a bit more.

My opinion is concordant with what I'm saying. My emotional reaction is, to be frank, often sad to see areas of what can colloquially be called nature lost for various reasons. But I'm quite aware that this comes from my own emotional relation to said areas, and the fact that I personally am sad to see them go. Since this reaction is partial, largely illogical, and undermined by inconsistencies even within this emotional reaction, I don't hold it as the opinion by which I live my life, and that which I put forward to others. I know I come off as cold in all of this, but frankly I see no inherent justice within the universe, and have not been convinced of any to date. Trust me, it isn't as coldly comfortable as it may seem to go against an overwhelming emotional reaction which you know to be inconsistent with the logical way that you understand the universe.

Then what is your argument? Having a position on such a subject is fine, it's the prerogative of any one. But to enter in to discussion and make claims of 'this is what we should do', to see justification enough on your own viewpoint to put it forward as one others should consider, entails a grounding in logic. If your viewpoint is based upon your emotional reaction, much as it is your right to hold this view and live by it, how can you expect others to be convinced by it? In what way is it, in fact, an argument rather than simply an opinion? I honestly thought that a grounding in logic was a pre-requisite of putting an argument forward.

Oh, and I thought of another thing. You talk about how if we were more compassionate towards other species you would feel that both sides were equally deserving of furthering themselves. But, frankly, animals and other lifeforms are not considerate towards us, not one bit, every creature is out for their own species.

Now I know this is because they don't have the capacity to be considerate, but this is rather the point. You're putting human constructed ideas like 'deserve' and 'compassion' on to both parties here, when in fact they are on a different basis than we are so such considerations cannot be applied across the board, it makes no sense.

And B) is about doing harm to the environment. Technically speaking, we can't harm the environment. This comes back to the idea of natural, and in fact the environment in which we live (what can broadly just be called the planet, inclusive of all systems contained within) can't really be harmed so to speak. **** happens, and **** changes, there's nothing special about the way the environment of the planet was when we popped up, why have people chosen this arbitary point in the progression of our planet and pegged it as 'natural', as the way things 'should' be, and by acting in any way that affects this we are working against nature, as if we weren't as much a part of it as, say, a bird building a nest?

Ah, now I think I've found the crux of it, you feeling wrong choosing human progression over the well being of our environment. Now my problem with this is two fold. A) Having a passion for something does not make it logically sound, I empathise with your ill feeling at such acts, even have it myself. But "this makes me feel morally bad" is not a logical argument, much as we must appreciate our own nature as emotional beings, we cannot expect others to be convinced to our viewpoint simply because we feel strongly about it.

Why should we feel guilty? You're still putting emotional reactions on things and not using logic to justify it. The fact that it is beautiful (which it only is to some to be fair) is subjective and irrelevant, it's an object simple as. And about them deserving to live more than us, or at least the same as, again this idea of 'deserve' is coming in to it. If you're not religious then where does this inherent sense of justice come from? Nothing deserves anything in real terms, only we put such ideas upon things.

Tbh I see no other path. If you're gonna debate logic without a spiritual or religious basis how can you have sympathy enough for illogical emotional reactions to allow them leway in logical arguments where they hold no weight?

Trust me, this isn't the conclusion I would have chosen to come to. It's pretty unyielding and cold I know, but it's the only conclusion I can reach with the way I see the world.
