It's in-keeping with the oldschool charm, and on the right track. I'd add a touch more elements to the headers and bg, as it's a little too simplistic atm, in my opinion. You'll also want to change up the default vb images left over, such as the stats icon at the bottom of the page. There'll be a fair few of those scattered around, so keeping them within a consistent, simple but professional looking theme is the challenge. Great start - glad you're giving it a shot.

By the way, your profile pic is disturbing. Add a .GIF that makes people have seizures or something, and put some stupid text that says "will you have dyslexia" or whatever the scientific name for having seizures is.
