Okay, I have 2.6, a newer and better version. I would get at least above 2.4, because some modes under those have strange effects...I'm sorry to say this, but your going to have to redownload I believe...Be sure to get at least 2.4...

If you don't want to start over with a new one, try making a clipping mask. With just a few splatters, not a full sig, and when and if you get it, make a sig...

what operating system, and version of gimp are you using?

Ok, ctrl+z until the layer isn't blue, then follow the steps excactly...If it still doesn't work, make sure you have the write layer. and just to be safe, move your tool to the move tool, don't use it, but that way you know your not modifying the color...

ok, in the layers dialog:
left click the layer, to make sure its the right one click the eye next to it.
If the right part disappears then click the eye again to make the layer visible again
Make sure the layer is darker on the dialog than others

Now, in the image box(Where your image is)
right click, the Layer>Transparency>Alpha to Selection

Okay, left click the layer first(Make sure its dark grey, selected), then right click on the image Layer>Transparency>Alpha to selection

you take your mouse, scroll over the layer, it darkens when your over it(Mine does),then click the right mouse button, then click alpha to selection:
