Ah, I didn't realize it was supposed to go so long. Too bad, they really had a cool concept going.

They kind of resolve the main storyline, albeit with a whimper. I guess they knew they were getting the axe and just rushed to get some sort of closure for their fans.

I'd highly recommend it. I'm not super big on literary fantasy (even though I've read LOTR about 20 times), but those stories seems to just use that as a backdrop for an incredibly well-crafted character drama. I've never spoken out loud to a book in reaction to what's about to happen before, and I was like, "No don't do it, dude! Their gonna kill you!!"
