This section of the forums is only for posting your custom maps. Discussions like these should probably go in the Forge Discussion section. Also, might I suggest making a poll out of this?

This is not the right forum to post this. This should be in forge discusion. This forum is for maps only. Requesting lock or move.
No one else post on this he has been told.

Haha, I hope that was worth it!

Any way, I would say that a map needs to be smooth, but not pretty. If the map is smooth throughout, it doesn't really matter what it looks, it just matters what the game play is like. Of course, it's always fun to see good looking maps.

    now that it's moved
yes i belive it has to look pretty because im quite good at leaving bland maps mid game.
also, if it is pretty, you can look around while you wait to spawn

Sure it does. But a map can't only be based on aesthetics and expect to be played. An equal blend of gameplay and looks is necessary for a fun experience.

For me, yes, I know there are several maps that play fantasticly, but dont look like it, but I feel that maps are better if it looks like more effort has been put into it. (piles of junk placed randomly =/= good)

I always strive to make good looking maps, if im invited to a custom game where the map is bland but the gameplay i solid, i still won't consider it an awesome map, I like seeing unique structures and intersting maps.

For aesthetics, it's more important for me to see something new than to look good. A great map should have both though.

    Gameplay > Aesthetics... obviously.

Gameplay is more important than aesthetics but if you leave bumps or areas that are hard to navigate or move around in than it's an issue. Also, a lot of people (including myself) use aesthetics to attract people to your map. If there are two maps with the same design but one looks like **** compared to the other, which would you choose?

I have come the realize that in halo, if I wanted to play on a map based on gameplay, I would just play on a default map like Orbital, Last Resort, Isolation, or The Pit. When I'm in custom games, of course I want to play on a map that looks neat, if not, what's the point of playing on a custom map? This is why when it comes to forging I have come to the conclusion that aesthetics are equally important as gameplay.

Gameplay is the primary over prettyness. I think most players and I will agree if a map looks good but doesn't play good then its only artwork and I don't keep artwork in my fileshare long. Now if the design is so bad it interferes with the gameplay then there is a problem. Structure can be an issue on any map, race, slayer, flag. If a hole is too small to fit in or you can squeeze out of the map that is also a problem. But this veiw of design is actually gameplay more then asthetics. I would say 50% of a map depends on gameplay, 20% on the extra stuff needed to make it look pretty and 30% on clean structural design for normal play. I'll agree better looking maps will be choosen b4 shitty ones.

You know aesthetics can improve the way a game plays. But yeah I think it's important as well to be pretty. I hate playing on maps where the gameplay is fine, but looking around and seeing a gross looking map is very interrupting.

A good example of a good looking map with crap gameplay is 80 grit from bungie day.

In my opinion I think that a map needs to be just as asthetically pleasing as its gameplay, if that makes any sense. I prefer playing on a nice looking map that plays well, rather than one that was sloppily put together that plays well. On the other hand if a nice looking map doesn't play well then i won't play at all. So in my opinion gameplay and asthetics are both equal in a map.

It depends. Gameplay is of utmost importance to any map, be it from Bungie or the forge community. If your forging on Foundry, aesthetics are a bit limited with the amount of square shapes, so gameplay would be a wiser focus. On Sandbox however there are enough differently shaped objects that someone should be able to add a moderate ammount of eye candy without sacrificing how it plays. Aesthetics should be built on only after your idea has been fleshed out. No need to make soemthing sexeh only to have to tear it down cus it breaks your map. Aesthetics are important to a degree, as long as they dont hinder your map.

not necessarily.... aesthetics cant really effect gameplay on a map. the map is what makes itself play good. and it also does effect cuz if its not clean it wont play as well.
