Sandbox Last Straw

    Tempers have been lost amongst the warehouses of Mombasa.

    Last Straw is a reworking of my previous map, Short Straw. The weapon layout has been totally changed, the vehicles have been changed, alterations have been made to scenery and although it looks very similar at first, its overall a new map.

    Last Straw is a semi-symetrical map with minor scenery differences between the two sides and slightly different weapon positions to accomodate the different scenery. Overall, the map is made up of 3 structures, 2 of which are bases and the third is the large central warehouse.


    Changes from Short Straw to Last Straw:

    In Short Straw I found the bases to be rather tricky to get in to, especially when the opposing team was keeping inside with shotguns. To fix this, Last Straw has an open back wall, forming another balcony. Players can jump from the ramp in to the base and out again.

    The top of the warehouse looked as if it should had a roof. In Last Straw, the walls which go around the edge of the top floor have been lowered to make them look more like safety barriers, rather than actuall walls.
    It also means that good jumpers won't have an advantage here, anyone can get up on to the wall in a single jump.

    Probably the most obvious change: the cranes have been removed. The cranes were nearly always mentioned in comments on the map. Most of the time they were positive comments but clearly they were distracting and were not beneficial for gameplay removed.
    I also saved quite a bit of the budget!

    Around each base you will find:


    • Rocket Launcher - 120s
    • Covenant Carbine - 30s
    • 2 Battle Rifles - 20s
    • SMG - 30s
    • Needler - 60s

    • 2 Frag Grenades - 10s
    • 4 Plasma Grenades (2 pairs) - 10s
    • Power Drain - 60s
    • Bubble Shield - 60s

    • 2 Mongooses - 20s
    • Chopper - 45s
    In each base:

    • 2 Spikers - 20s
    • Mauler - 45s
    • Battle Rifle - 20s

    • Regenerator - 60s
    Around the Warehouse:

    • 2 SMGs - 30s
    • 2 Plasma Rifles - 10s

    • 2 Frag Grenades - 10s
    • Grav Lift - 90s
    Inside the Warehouse

    • Plasma Pistol - 45s
    • Spartan Laser - 180s
    • 2 Assault Rifles - 10s

    • 2 Frag Grenades - 10s
    • Overshield - 150s

    The grav lift can be found in front of the Warehouse, along with 2 frag grenades.

    You can see the ramp used to jump in to the base clearly. This is also where the bomb spawns in Assault.

    Down the side - yes, there is some scenery in the ground for you geomerging addicts (in case you missed the geomerged tunnels) now don't bug me about it! Enjoy the geomerging and shut up.

    The layout of this map is really nice. I remember reading about Short Straw a while ago. I don't see any problems with this, the forging is really smooth and it looks like you've had it all planned out. Although, I think it would look better on Foundry, since your going for a Warehouse theme. Anyways, the map looks like a really fun objective game.

    Didn't you say Short Straw was your premake of Longshore?

    Hahaha I like how you told the "geofreaks" to like it that was pretty funny. But on a more serious note the map's layout seems to be its greatest strength. I never saw Short Straw but as far as where everything is the weapons and all seem to be evenly spread. Also I like how you tried something a little different and put the chopper instead of a warthog or something even though I do love warthogs. A Solid post kudos

    Well Short Straw was a premake of Longshore, which does have an urban setting so I built Short Straw with an urban theme in mind and the names of the areas sort of just stuck.
    Short Straw originally had a warthog at each base but there isn't much room for driving it inside the map so players either didn't use it or drove it around the dunes.
    I was considering ghosts instead of choppers but I felt that the ghost could get around the map too easily, being able to turn on the spot and boost along the straights. The chopper can still get around quickly but its not as maneuverable so other players still stand a chance!

    Haven't played it yet, but it looks awesome! The warehouse caught my attention, but the bases look good as well. I'll definetly dl this later and try it out.

    btw the last pic is very helpful

    EDIT: sorry for the late reply, I didn't get to play any real games on it but just from walking around it seems like it would play well. As I thought the warehouse is definetly my favorite area. Good forging, simple but effective.
