Every time i post a map i get some comment like, its to open. or its good in all but u need to make it less open.

Valhalla, Last Resort, Sandbox, Avalanche, Cold Storage, even Guardian all have open parts. I put 1 maybe 2 open areas in a map and i get my head bitten off.

You cant make a good map without open areas. it just doesn't work.

    I am VERY annoyed!!!

You just need to be more open, to ideas that is.

Ignore those comments. When someone says the words "Looks" and "open" in the same sentence, they only scanned the pictures.

The reality is that the map has parts that you want to play through, and parts you should avoid, just like the default maps. Take Guardian for example, going through top mid or going up the gold lift is a serious deathtrap in most heated games. You are wide open and very easy to kill. All custom maps are like that too. Amplified is open between the bases and the middle area, but not the sides. Onslaught you are wide open if you are around top A or B side. And there are many more examples, those are just popular maps among the competitive community.

I was seriously going to post a joke thread that showed a labyrinth styled map depicting what is "acceptable" by most of the community in terms of space. But hey, this thread works too.

Yeah, you have to experiment to make a map, try it!

DRO got it just about perfect. There is also more examples of open areas in MLG maps is, sword bridge and courtyard on The Pit, bottom mid on Lockdown, streets on Construct, etc. The whole idea of leaving open spots is risk vs. reward. Without open spots on a map the only routes that will be taken are the quickest ones. General rule is shortcuts should be open.
Seems like people are saying looks to open like people used to say needs more interlocking. It is a very poor response and shows that they either did not download the map, read the post, analyze the pictures in depth, have no understanding of forge, or don't have a taste in art. With my next map post I will spend much time explaining the reason for open areas and why they are open the way they are. They will be warned of being reported of spam if they still post, "too open".

Indeed. Some individuals like to spam these phrases because they think it will allow them to raise their post count without being detected as spam. If you see a post like this, masquerading as something intelligent, report the post and it should be dealt with fairly quickly.

yes, maps need some areas of high risk. on some maps, this means open areas. however, the maps with open areas also have geometry, to block lines of sight.. take valhalla. as you said, it has open areas. but the the terrain is hilly and uneven, and this is simply not possible to create in forge. on a flat map, you cant have too many open areas without large structures to block lines if sight. i looked at your maps, and they werent overly open, so youre fine.

however, when i was looking at your maps, i only saw one or two comments that said a map was too open. thats hardly "biting your head off". these people are just trying to give you advise, but it is spam if that is all they say.
also, i noticed that you double or even triple posted most of your maps. dont do that. it is not allowed. you will be spanked.

It's because the people that tell you this are ****ing idiots, every last one of them. They have no clue to what level design entails, and I guarantee you that if a bunch of tubes were thrown on the ground, it would still be "too open". Their mothers should be beaten and their fathers castrated for raising such mewling trolls. Don't worry about these assholes and just sift through the **** to pick out the nuggets of real criticism that intelligent people give. Keep your head up, dude.

He probably won't like you for calling him a guy/girl lawl
Also they do it because they don't actually play the maps which I used to do but, now I really barely even comment on maps unless they are featureworthy or just plain horrible.
Edit: Lol you called him a guy/girl because you called rain a Guy before :p

    Don't suggarcoat it, Squid!!

Haha, yeah, "more cover" is the new "needs more interlocking." They'll tell you that until every square inch is covered with an item, and at that point they'll tell you, it's too crowded. It's a waste of energy to bother with those people.
